Georgia football coach Kirby Smart said freshman cornerback Tyson Campbell is good to go, but offensive guard Ben Cleveland will miss the Tennessee game.

Campbell had a shoulder subluxation, and when the freshman cornerback tried to re-enter, he grew nauseated. Smart said Campbell required an IV after getting dehydrated.

Cleveland suffered the broken fibula in his left leg in the third quarter of Georgia’s 43-29 win at Missouri.

Smart said Cleveland will be on crutches for the next week before returning the following week to put weight on the leg.

Sophomore Justin Shaffer filled in for Cleveland after the injury on Saturday. The Bulldogs could start Shaffer or senior Kendall Baker in Cleveland’s place on Saturday.

“We’re going to evaluate that through two or three days of work,” Smart said. “Ben Cleveland was playing well … you hate to see that injury, especially from a continuity standpoint.

“We’ll look to get our best five in.”

Shaffer has yet to start a game, but Baker started 14 games at left guard last season.

Thomas went out in the first quarter when it appeared a player rolled up on his previously inured left ankle. Thomas originally sprained his ankle on the first play of the second half at South Carolina on Sept. 8.

“Andrew Thomas was no worse off,” Smart said. “We felt like he probably could have gone back in if he had to with the injury.”

True freshman Cade Mays started and played in place of Thomas against Middle Tennessee and came on in relief at Missouri. Mays, a 5-star prospect, enrolled in January after finishing his prep career at Knoxville’s Catholic High School.

Smart said if Thomas is back, Mays could get work at right guard.

Simmons, who started the first four games this season, injured his shoulder in the first quarter.

“Not sure how long Tyler will be out with the shoulder,” Smart said on Monday. “It may be a week, maybe two weeks, maybe less.”

Redshirt freshman Eric Stokes came on in relief of Campbell at cornerback and finished with four tackles and three pass break-ups.

Smart said inside linebacker Monty Rice was a pregame scratch on account of “an MCL that’s been bothering him since the [Middle Tennessee] game.

Rice practiced this week and could return for Tennessee.

Natrez Patrick an Juwan Taylor started at inside linebacker with Rice out.

Georgia football injury list

Fibulas must heal quickly. Or it must have been a hairline fracture. All in all, pretty good news.

DB Tray Bishop (internal team issue)

Does anyone know what's going on with Bishop?

He had a "felony eavesdropping" charge sometime over the offseason.

Any student athlete facing a felony charge has to serve an immediate suspension. Probably won't get an update on it until the investigation/trial and review for reinstatement has been complete.

Wonder what's going on with Netori Johnson @ OG? He should be making a dent in the depth chart some time soon I'm assuming.

Netori Johnson

We have brought in boat loads of elite talent at his position.

It should be noted however that he is just in his second year. It's not uncommon for OL to make their biggest impact in their JR or SR season.

OL is a difficult transition from HS to college. If anything, it highlights just how impressive some of the young guys that have stepped in for us are.

I think we all get that

Sure and it's also not uncommon for guy to start as Freshman or R-FRESHMAN or get significant back up playing time...our current O line is a perfect example.

It took Cleveland a while but he finally came around at the end of last year and hopefully Netori can make some noise by the end of the year. From what I understand talent is not the issue,it's more about focus and grasp
of the playbook.

update injury status from practice

LINK /

quote:

— Andrew Thomas was practicing and appears to be fine. Still has his ankle wrapped up.
— Jackson Harris was participating in drills and should dress out and most likely play Saturday.
— Monty Rice had a brace on his right knee but was full go and appears to be healthy. — As mentioned yesterday Ben Cleveland is out 4-6 weeks with a fractured fibula.
— Cade Mays was seen working at 1st team right guard in place of Cleveland. Justin Shaffer originally replaced Cleveland during the Missouri game so expect the competition to be between these two.
— Tyler Simmons was not out there despite Smart saying that he may be practicing today.
— Also Tyson Campbell who has a stomach bug against Missouri Saturday appeared to be 100%.

that's about as great as you could possibly expect. I'm really intrigued to see thomas back at LT with mays sliding to RG.

I hope Mays buries people this week after what was said about him on Tennessee forums because he chose UGA.

I would like for Thomas to stay out another week. We will need him more for LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Kentucky than we will for the Voles.

If Ben was healthy I may agree to play it safe and throw cade out there at LT but however bad UT is you don't want to go in down 2 starting linemen. Shaffer may end up being good but he's not ready yet it doesn't seem. And I'm certain if courson adn kirby feel AT is healthy enough to practice then he'll be fine. Kirby even said he could have gone back in saturday if we needed him to.

Ultra-suprise package that guarantees Quay Walker gets the sack and lets him drag his nuts over the Tennessee fanbase one more time this year.
