This is so funny. All that crap they talked about Fields.

This kind of shtick works if you’re beating Georgia and winning SEC championships as Spurrier regularly did.
Spend less time showing off your UGA obsession to the media and more time motivating your team to end Kentucky and Mizzou’s win streaks over you.

His antics are going to get old as hell in Fl after he loses to UGA this season.

Trying to match Spurriers troll game is a recipe for failure.

Update... Mullen attempts to walk back the comment...
LINK
What I got out of that was classic deflect and defend...
1) attempt to reframe what you said to put the importance on another separate statement - I talked about having reasons... that was the important part
2) attempt to make it seem that the broad statement that you made was really only about you rather than anyone else - notice the use of "I" repeatedly
3) lack of specificity or ownership on why Steele is transferring... just trying to limit the conversation to it not being him lying *exclusively* on what to expect on arrival.
4) blame everything on the increased attention nationally on transfers due to the portal
Bonus... Grown man referencing young men using the word "giggle" just continues to point out how awkward Mullen is... Chuckle, laugh, etc...
Ultimately, he was lucky he fielded the question at a UF event and not at something like the SEC meetings where someone might have asked a more pointed question...

quote:
TAMPA, Fla. -- A quote from coach Dan Mullen shortly after Georgia quarterback Justin Fields transferred from the program following his freshman season has been used to troll Mullen in the past few weeks by rivals, particularly in light of the recent transfer of top 2019 signee Chris Steele.
Back in March, Mullen said the following (it's worth pointing out he never specifically mentioned Fields):
"I’d think we did a poor job recruiting if guys were coming in and then immediately walking out the door because it was something different than what they thought it would be and we lied to them during recruiting, or we sold them on a dream that wasn’t true," he said.
Of course, in light of a recent run of negative headlines capped by Steele's transfer, many rival fans have pointed back to that quote as a sort of 'got ya' moment.
Mullen was asked about the quote in regards to the Steele situation, with a reporter noting that he had also said if players transfer it needs to be for a specific reason.
"I think there were a couple different things that go on," Mullen said. "I think as you see young men transfer around the country, part of what I said is you hope that there's reasons they're doing it and it's for the right reasons and it's not because I told them something our program was not. Or I'm somebody that I'm not, within the process."
There were obviously multiple factors at play in Steele's decision to leave. Not knowing what to expect when he arrived was not one of them, Mullen said. "I do think in the recruiting process, I think one of the things I always try to strive with our guys is I try to be who I am so they know who I am, so they know what type of person they're going to get from a head coach," Mullen said.
"One of the things, I love looking at our freshmen in our first freshman meeting that I have every year, after they've kind of been through their first, whatever cycle it may be, whether it's their first offseason, whether it's first training camp, whether it's summer conditioning. I always look at them and I say, 'Hey, in recruiting didn't I promise you we would work hard and I'd push you to levels you've probably never been pushed before?'
"And they usually get a little smirk on their face and start to giggle. I say, 'I just want to make sure I told you what you were expecting.' They're like, 'Coach, you told me this would be harder work than I've ever been through and anything I've done before.' I said, 'Good, I just want to make sure I told you that and I'd follow through with that promise.'"
Having said that, Mullen wrapped back around to the Steele topic and the original question. He also made a decent point about today's version of college football and college football media.
"I think that's where that kind of came from when you look at these situations that are out there," he said. "I think you look around the country, I think the transfers and how the direction all that's headed with the NCAA brings a lot more attention.
"There's guys that have been transferring for years for different programs. I just think the portal and some of the new legislation that they're looking into within the NCAA right now is maybe bringing it more to a public light than it used to be."

How each coach views his players—
MULLEN: “I always look at them and I say, 'Hey...And they usually get a little smirk on their face and start to giggle.”
SMART: “ We want to talk with our helmets.”
