Here’s the thing about black jerseys and blackout movements

Everyone alludes to the Auburn blackout but forgets why it was special, which had little to do with the actual color of the jersey.

The week of that game, people were clamoring for Gameday to come back to Athens for the first time since 1998 (they ended up going to Amherst College instead). UGA had just come back from the pits of despair after a long walk off field goal to beat Vanderbilt to then upset Tebow and the Gators in Jacksonville. At 2 losses there was a palpable sense that this team had turned a corner and the insanity of the 2007 season had put us at #10 and Auburn at #18.

Underlying all of this was the rumor - an actual internet rumor with Twitter and this site in its relative infancy and Facebook at the height of its power. Supposedly some packages had been delivered to BM and the contents might be black football jerseys. The novelty of the idea that Georgia would ever wear black jerseys was tantalizing and the team on the field was rebounding. It needed an edge. WE the fans needed an edge. And this the grassroots blackout movement grew.

Fast forward to game time and the entire town was dressed in black. It was surreal, never seen before and the stadium pregame was a sight to behold... except the players on the field were in red. Nevertheless the disappointment wasn’t going to ruin the game. Until the band lined up and played krypton and the team which typically walked out to the granite bulldog seemed to linger further back in the bowels of Sanford than they ever normally did. And then they came sprinting out and the sheer euphoria of that moment was almost too much to comprehend.

It had nothing to do with the color of the jerseys. Sure it looked cool and the stadium thumping Back in Black was a nice touch. But what really made the moment was that the fanbase felt listened to. We saw this once underachieving team turn it around and we asked for something unprecedented to confirm that the turn around wasn’t a fluke. In the midst of the greatest season in CFB history, we wanted our signature moment and we got it and then some.

So why will that never happen again?

Simply put, we are on top now. We, players and fans, needed a push in 2007. We clawed back from being ranked #24 in Week 6 to #10 in Week 10 and we wanted to see us push further.

This team doesn’t need that push. Not right now. We didn’t need it against Bama in 2008 either, though we were too naive to know it at the time. As fans we can grassroots the shite out of a blackout but it’s been done before; the novelty is gone.

Don’t run away from wearing black jerseys. But don’t wear them just to wear them either. They were born out of something special and should exist for a moment when it’s apparent they’re needed. Notre Dame isn’t that.

Wow. That was really well written and probably the most solid post ever made here.

Definitely better than anything the people who get paid to write about Georgia football ever write.

Black jersey on Saturday night, probably the biggest night at Sanford Stadium in over 20 years, would be incredible. Do we need them? Hell no, but would it be the most memorable game maybe in the history if we did? You bet your arse it would. People don't want to wear the blacks because we got embarrassed the last time we wore them. I say frick that shite. How many recruits will we pick up on Saturday night? Some of you say it doesn't matter, but it does. Let's black out this Mf'er!

100% this, we don't need a black out but goddamn if it isn't an awesome experience. The fans, students, players, and recruits love it and a game like this is a perfect chance to break them out

Nice write-up. Seems as though you're implying black jerseys are a distraction. Is that true? Could be.

If our players get distracted by jerseys then our coaches suck

Good post, that first one will never ever ever be duplicated. Being on campus that week, that day, and that moment was just one of those "you had to be there" things. I've said it a bunch and will probably say it a bunch more but the best solution to this whole quagmire is to pick one game every year (I think the last home game seems the most obvious that makes sense) to wear them. Remove any mojo or hype or "fake juice" about them, just make it the Jersey we happen to wear that week. The recruits love them, the players love them, the fans love them, and they look good as hell. It's a shame we aren't allowed to ever wear them anymore because some fuddy duds can't get over a game from 11 years ago that we wouldn't have won regardless of jersey color.

My favorite week of undergrad. I remember the signs on the doors at Snelling etc then that Saturday stepping outside and everyone all the way up Lumpkin was in black and it was a ‘holy shite this is gonna be a fun day’ feeling. I still have one of those Red Baron footballs the student section kept throwing at Auburn players when they’d go to piss or whatever in that thing on the sidelines. Don’t think they gave out any more projectiles at games after that.

Georgia will set the All-Time attendance record on Saturday.

Imagine fans donned in black doing Light Up Sanford. Dawgs playing a top 10 team & a historically relevant one in Notre Dame. The crowd would go insane for the blackout.

It’s an appropriate moment & one we can mark with a W.

We're hosting top 10 Notre Dame in Athens while ranked 3rd for an 8pm game. I don't think the team will need to wear black to make this the "most memorable game maybe in history".

If fans wanna wear black fine but yall are only gonna get yourselves all pissed off if you think Kirby is gonna bring out black jerseys this week. Won't happen.

Not a distraction, just people clambering for a feeling that they’re not going to get. My point is the Blackout is special because it grew organically. It wasn’t meticulously planned and strategized and marketed. It grew out of a need for something greater than just another game and it was special.

If people want black jerseys just to see us in black jerseys, wear them for Senior Day every year. But I get the impression people want to relive that Auburn game and it’s not going to happen without the right conditions and those conditions can’t be manufactured.

If we were still a 10-15 ranked team inviting a higher ranked team into Athens, looking to make a name for ourselves on the national stage, I’d understand a desire to wear black. But that’s not us anymore. We’ve outgrown that need and that’s a good thing. We can wear red and still have this game be special.

The black jerseys look awesome and I know it’s a great recruiting tool but I wanna see our traditional uniforms/colors for this game. It’s going to be once in a lifetime opportunity to watch Notre Dame come into Sanford Stadium and our players know the importance of this game. No need to change things up and make it bigger than it needs to be. I say this game will be the most watched game this season.

Sanford will be full of 96,000+ for the first time ever. UGA fans have broke records paying for a ticket. It’s an 8 o’clock game. UGA fans will be rowdier, drunker, and louder than ever before. You cannot tell me nor convince me, that a game people have looked forward to for years, that has had this hype, won’t or can’t hit another level. If UGA fans black out the stadium I think ND will look around and see this is a different brand and atmosphere than they’ve seen. If UGA comes out in black...the fans will go even crazier and make, what’s already a big game, an even larger game, and an added edge in Sanford is huge. It’s not that UGA needs (more) motivation, it’s the fact that UGA can do it, and set the tone for the rest of the year. Either way, I’ll be there. I’ll wear black. I’ll fill my body with arse whipping alcohol juice. I’ll ruin my vocal cords. I’ll deal with the 3 day hangover. Just whip Notre Dames arse like we are capable of and the rest will fall into place.

We can. However, we can wear black and it won't be less special and it'll look awesome. The team wants to wear them. Fromm said he wants to wear them. Give the people what they want.

Good writing.

I like the jerseys and I think once a year would be cool.

I would just always wear them for the last home conference game... no matter who it is... that way there isn’t fake juice; it’s just the game it’s done. Doesn’t mess with HC or Senior game... or maybe... say the First night game in October... we don’t know... but make it something that happens... not something that’s needed... that way Players get the opportunity to play in them and the Fans who are superstitious ( even though UGA is 3-1 in them) don’t have to stress about it.

If we were to bring them back out for a big time game, I just don’t think you can “plan” for it. Like 2007, I believe it should be under wraps the entire week leading up to the game, come out in classic red for warm ups, go to the locker room and change to black.
