Do they suck? Hell yes.
Look. Millions of shiny happy people have been made happy by R.E.M. songs. But they literally wrote a song mocking them for it. It's called "Shiny Happy People".
Beyond that, they are the original enablers and facilitators that spawned three generations/and counting of pretentious unbearable music snobs. Which is disgraceful.
Music is a beautiful thing. And in every other genre music its collaborative and shared and humble and everyone realizes that they are part of a chain building on something that came before them.

SO, yes,. They've made some good music, but they are vile shite eaters in a peculiar way that is all their own ….which cancels all that out.

Not confused, and I doubt anyone has ever confused Nirvana with REM.
So, yes, the whole song is their attempt at creating a sarcastic caricature of the sugary pop songs that they despise and look down their noses at. I mentioned in the other thread about this that I watched a documentary about their snobbery and so this is coming straight from Stipe and Co's art school snob mouths.
Basically, some types of people who they hate and despise and look down their noses at thought (correctly) that some of their music was too dark and gloomy and depressing, so they wrote this one as a joke to mock them with. Problem is that it became a giant hit, and helped make them filthy rich, so they have to go on endlessly in the documentary with their limp wrists dangling and eyes rolling talking about how embarrassed of the song they are.
I gagged a little watching it.
