I'm looking to go to Cairo, Egypt - ideally sometime around Thanksgiving but possibly another time. I am having a hard time finding even a decent flight price (any time of year) for Cairo. They're all somewhere around $1,000.

My travel philosophy usually has been to take what deals I can find to places I know I will eventually want to go. But Cairo is the clear #1 on my list right now and I sure would like to swing it on my next trip if the price is at least reasonable.

Anyone have any ideas? Certainly open to connecting on separate tickets in various cities if it's practical to do so.

Where are you flying from? US? Europe?

That would have been helpful to mention, wouldn’t it? I will be flying out of Atlanta.

When I went to Egypt last August, I did a round trip flight from Atlanta to Rome for about $670, and between the dates of that leg I had a round trip from Rome to Cairo for like $300. I just had wiggle room between the round trip legs in case some shite happened.

I haven't been to Africa much (just 3 northern countries on it), but I considered getting there for under $1000 good enough for me

I gotcha. This will be my first foray into Africa, so I guess maybe it's just that flight prices in general are kind of high there...?

From Europe to Cairo, not really. Usually 300-500. Not bad when you compare how ridiculous it is to fly from the US to Central/South America (unless you want to try Spirit Airlines )

It's just the part where you have to get to Europe (I don't know of any straight shots from the US to Cairo, but those I'm quite sure are $1000+ if they exist).

Are you a solo traveler

I found a $1,050 RT flight from Atlanta to Cairo (short layovers each way) through Turkish Airlines for my preferred time to go.

Maybe it’s just me but $1,000 to get halfway around the world sounds like a hell of a deal.

Well, so far this year (for foreign trips) I have flown to Dubai for $685 and New Delhi for $575. Both of those are a good bit further than Cairo. And my European flights average somewhere around $500.

So strictly from a price / distance ratio, $1,000 from Atlanta to Cairo sucks compared to previous foreign flights of mine. But we all know flying is complicated and there are a lot of factors involved in the price of a flight.

I usually see fares like that if I went one way (I typically don’t start and come back from the same destination)

Egyptians are hardcore naggers to sell you anything these days and want tips for things such as pressing an elevator button for you. You probably experienced similar nagging in India, though.

About half of my foreign trips include multiple countries, but I usually fly in / out of the same airport.

One positive for this (possible) trip is that while the airfare might be more than I would like I have earned a few free hotel nights. Plus, I won't be going anywhere else - no other flights, train rides, car rentals, etc. And it wouldn't be a long trip.

So overall, I don't think it would be as expensive a trip as several others I have taken. Still, no one wants to pay any more than they have to, so if anyone reading this has any ideas on how to cut down the travel cost on getting to Cairo and back from Atlanta feel free to let me know.

Yeah. Lots of nagging in India. And when you're a 6'3'' white guy who likes to wear t-shirts and cargo shorts you stand out just a bit.

I flew from Houston to Beirut for like $800 two weeks before my flight left.

I’m sure you can find something cheaper to Cairo with this much of a head start.

I would look into flying into Istanbul then catching a connecting flight to Cairo.

Found a RT flight for $842 and booked it. Figured that was about as good as I would find.

So much to see in Egypt I hope I get there.

Luxor, Karnak, Abu Simbel, etc.

Should be a good one.

Turkish Airlines is going to have the best price on the Atlanta to Cairo (through Istanbul) - about $850 for your time window.

At least, that's what Expedia shows.

That’s exactly what I booked, Ace.
