April Costa Rica

We are taking a trip to Costa Rica the first week of April. We plan to spend a few nights in Arenal and a few nights at the beach (Riu Palace). We're going to do some rafting and zip lining. Any other suggestions and how are the beaches and water for just lounging?

I am going to Rui in September and although I haven't been yet, I have heard the Arenal volcano tour, ATV tour, and white water rafting is great Also heard it's good to take a day trip to Nicaragua to check out the scene there. Heard coco beach is worth a trip for night life or dining.

Will be there at the same time and also spending a couple nights at Arenal. We are doing a boat tour over to Isla Tortuga (full day) and the beach looks great out there. Also heading to Manuel Antonio for a few days.

I'm planning an April trip too. I'll probably head straight to La Fortuna (Arenal) for some hiking and hot springs. Then I'm heading over to Monteverde for ziplining, hanging bridges and a tour of the cloud forrest. Then I'm going to finish with a few days at the beach.
The only thing I'm unsure of is the final beach segment. Looking at Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo or some place off the beaten path.

Manuel Antonio is in that same area as monteverde and arenal.

It’s actually a good little haul form Arenal to Manuel Antonio.

Most people hit those three together on the same trip.

That is what we did. Flew into San Jose. Shuttle to Monteverde for a couple nights, then to Arenal for a couple nights, then to Manual Antonio for rest of trip, back to San Jose to fly home.
We did spend a lot of time on the road. If I ever go back....I'm packing really light and just taking small planes from location to location.

Went to Arenal in January. Hotel nayara is incredible- highly recommend. Skip the hanging bridges and try to do the waterfall repelling. La Fortuna is fun to walk around and visit the local bars. If you are Catholic, their church in the middle of town was awesome. The local hot springs were pretty cool. We just went to the public one.

We r leaving next week. Any suggestions for zip lining in Arenal. I am looking for one that is safe and that possibly gives you a chance to exit if my 9 year old gets scared.

Can confirm this. It was my least favorite thing we did, BUT we did see a lot of unique wildlife there.
No suggestions on the zip lining as we did not do it there.

We didn't go zip lining in Arenal so don't know. We went in Monteverde. And where we went....basically after the first or second zip line...only way down was to zip line down.
Contact these people...they might have a suggestion for you.

Local travel agency in CR...so they will know which tours are reputable companies.
We zip lined with Sky Trek in Monteverde....looks like they have one in Arenal as well.

This company was great...they brake for you at the end of each line...so makes it a little less scary.

The best place in CR is Montezuma, and the area surrounding it (Waterfalls, Cabo Blanco, Malpais, Manzanillo). Some incredible hikes and beaches on the peninsula.
Second is Puerto Viejo, the waves and beaches are just insane.

We went in April 2 years ago and the sun is very intense on the beaches, the sand gets very hot during mid-day. Also, we flew into Liberia Airport which was more convenient and rented a car, the roads are rough though to Monteverde.

I would highly recommend doing the Adventure Dining in Jaco if you are in the area. Wonderful food on a beautiful estate in the rainforest. It was very affordable and probably the highlight of my whole trip.

April should still be the Dry Season
Last year in March I drove this route in a 4WD SUV in Dry Season.
It took 6 hours of actual driving to go 132 miles.

Also, try to get down to Manuel Antonio/ Quepos area.

By far, my favorite area. We drove as well and in April. We may have had 1-2hrs of total rain on the whole trip. But yeah, the roads can slow you down in some places for sure.

We tried to get a 4x up the west coast of that peninsula, that was a nightmare (great time...flat tires, river crossings, talking with folks by hand gestures...). We ended up backtracking all the way to the route you took to get to Tamarindo.
