Sources have said that Temple has shown a clear preference for defensive-minded coaches to this point. While there are likely other candidates as well, two names that sources specifically mentioned are of interest in Philadelphia are Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko and Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.

Elko is in his first season in College Station, part of a decade and a half long climb up the coaching ladder; his first defensive coordinator job came at the Merchant Marine Academy in 2001, and from there Elko coordinated defenses at Fordham, Hofstra, Bowling Green, Wake Forest and Notre Dame before joining Jimbo Fisher’s staff.

In his one season on staff, Elko has helped the Aggies’ defense improve from 78th to 36th in total defense and from 87th to 58th in scoring defense.

Judging by what they paid most recent HC Geoff Collins Elko would be in line for a $200k raise at minimum. Temple has become a bit of a launch pad for HCs as of late so I wouldn't blow this off as no big deal. Their last 4 HCs were Al Golden (5 years), Steve Addazio (2 years), Matt Rhule (4 years), Geoff Collins (2 years). All 4 got P5 jobs (Miami, Boston College, Baylor, Georgia Tech) after their time in Philly. We may need to pay that man his money if we want to keep him.

I don't think telling coaches "Hey, if you're an assistant for us you'll fall flat on your face if you leave to be a HC" is a very good pitch.

Besides, those were all from Sumlin's staff.

Have you not seen the difficulty we have had getting a really good DC here the last... 20 years? It would be a huge loss.

It’s not going to come down to money, it’s going to come down to how bad he wants to be a head coach.

I think we can get a very solid replacement, but I do not want to roll the dice on that and deal with the recruiting fallout right before early signing day when we know we have an excellent DC. It would suck hard if this happened.

At this juncture is absolutely going to be about money. He's originally from Pennsylvania, grew up in NJ, and went to Penn. He's been on the East coast almost his entire career. He knows that area very well and Temple is a pretty good AAC job that has launched several coaches into better gigs. It's not like he is being looked at by Coastal Carolina or some other super low end G5 team.

If he gets the offer and we don't counter with a big raise he'll be gone. Period.

Do you not expect us to counter with a big raise? That is why I’m saying it’s not going to be about money. I don’t think we will suddenly get cheap with assistants now. If we do we will have bigger problems than losing Elko since that’s why our current HC left his previous employer

I’m sure we will match or go over whatever Temple can pay him. But if he wants to run his own program he could still very well leave

He is making $1.8 million and is the 4th highest paid assistant in all of CFB. I'm guessing that if we want to keep him we are going to have to give him an Aranda like $2.5 million deal. He was one of 21 assistant coaches to get paid $1 million + last year.
quote:

1. Dave Aranda, LSU — $2.5 million
2. Brent Venables, Clemson — $2.2 million
3. Kevin Steele, Auburn — $2.05 million
4. Mike Elko, Texas A&M — $1.8 million
5. Jim Leavitt, Oregon — $1.7 million
6. Greg Schiano, Ohio State — $1.5 million
6. Mel Tucker, Georgia — $1.5 million
8. Pep Hamilton, Michigan — $1.45 million
9. Todd Grantham, Florida — $1.402 million
10. Don Brown, Michigan — $1.3 million
11. Tyson Helton, Tennessee — $1.205 million
12. Mike Locksley, Alabama — $1.2 million
12. Ryan Day, Ohio State — $1.2 million
12. Travaris Robinson, South Carolina — $1.2 million
15. Alex Grinch, Ohio State — $1.158 million
16. Chip Lindsey, Auburn — $1.1 million
16. Jimmy Lake, Washington — $1.1 million
16. Tosh Lupoi, Alabama — $1.1 million
16. Wes McGriff, Ole Miss — $1.1 million
16. Todd Orlando, Texas — $1.1 million
21. Harlan Barnett, Florida State — $1.005 million

Also, I wouldn't say refusing to pay that would be getting cheap with our assistants. If we won't go very far over the $2 million Temple was paying their last HC we aren't going to keep him.

You and I have no idea what Temple is willing to pay for a football coach. And I’m guessing we were pretty far over the 2m mark last year when we were trying to get Aranda. Again, you can think we won’t spend that much but our pattern of behavior shows the opposite. I’m much more worried he will want to be a HC than the money part

I know what their low end is. They paid their last two HCs $2 million per. That is where the pay will start for whoever they hire.

Which will obviously not be enough to get him if money is the only factor

$200k is $200k. Even with a $1.8m salary that's pretty significant bump.

I don’t see how you could follow A&M football the last 5-6 years and think we would hesitate to give Elko a 200k a year raise after the year we had defensively unless you know something we don’t

I don't think it'll be just a $200k raise to keep him. That's the minimum raise he'll get from taking the HC job at Temple. I said before I think it will take a $2.5 million LSU/Aranda type deal to keep him. That would be a $700k raise from where he is right now. That's such a large bump that I do think our admin might hesitate.
