They matter when you're fighting for a postseason spot. That certainly doesn't apply to the Vols this year. Losing a Tuesday night game to Lipscomb shouldn’t even register to anyone.

Yep, midweek games don’t matter at all. Have to be at least .500 or better to deserve an ncaa bid as well.

We lost a bunch of midweek games in the 90s. It doesn't make a difference if you do well in conference as the Vols have done so far. For the record, LSU hasn't lost a midweek game this year.

They help more than they hurt. Win 2/3 on the weekend and you are never moving down. Mid-week games can help to bolster your record, and if they are against a rival, can be the difference in you or them hosting and/or seeding, if it is close.
