Just saw a quote from John Wall where he said he wouldve gone to Memphis had Cal stayed there.

While I'm sure Kentucky wouldve still had some success without Cal do you think UK wouldve been as successful without him?

He's certainly become a cog in the wheel of the Kentucky basketball machine.

I think so. Only because we’ve won multiple NCs under multiple coaches. It may have taken longer to get things going depending on who came in but I think UK still remains successful.

Yes. Eventually. Only takes the right coach and it's easier to build a bball program than a fball. Especially one with as much history as UK. The only basketball power that is struggling right now would be UCLA and UCONN if you count them as a power.

I would consider Indiana a historical power and they are struggling. Syracuse as well. Also teams like Georgetown and Wake Forest have become irrelevant.

Kentucky will also be a destination job in basketball.
I'm still shocked our AD hire Billy Gillespie, and thought that was a good idea.

Indiana is like Nebraska or Tennessee in FB: been mediocre to bad for so long it's hard to even consider them a blue blood

Georgetown and Wake had never been a powerhouse program, although they had had great teams in the past. IU just can't seem to get guys on campus. My point is you don't see a lot of NCAAB powers stay down for long compared to fball programs.

Georgetown was 100% a powerhouse program. I would say historically they are more of a powerhouse program than UCONN in MBB. UCONN had great teams in the 2000s and 2010s but I can remember Ewing and Iverson Mutumbo making Gyown relevant in the 80s and 90s.

Yes they would have become a power again. It's not like they were down for 20 years. To think that they would have stayed as low as Gillispie took them would be to assume that they hired equally bad coaches for the last decade. Kentucky is on a Kansas/UNC/Duke level of prestige with an unlimited budget and easily winnable conference.

Indiana’s problem is they were hellbent on getting away from Bobby Knight. They had some success with Sampson but then he got hit with NCAA violations. And Crean kept coming up short.

"There wasn't going to be any celebration for beating Indiana, they haven't beaten anyone in a long time."- Coach Cal, I mean Orgeron

They wouldn’t be what they are but in any area of competition the organization with the most resources and experience in “pushing the boundaries” (best legal counsel) will finish at or near the top.

Kentucky would've spent the money to eventually get another great coach.

Yep. They would have ended up eventually luring someone like Sean Miller, Bruce Pearl, or Billy Donovan to UK.

Cal will be there until he rots. IMO he may get 1 more before he’s done.

Kentucky basketball is done with Calipari. He recruits ok, on the level of Will Wade, but doesn’t coach well enough in the postseason.
