Would Houston Nutt have been able to achieve the same level of success at Clemson?

We’ve all heard Dabo speak, there’s no way he’s the brains behind the operation. Clemson went all in with the church that washes the booster money and provides illegitimate benefits to Clemson players. Dabo is one step away from saying he’s in the people heppin bidness.

Let’s say Clemson decided to go all in a couple of years earlier and needed a shameless huckster to be the front man while they threw money at the best assistants and croots. Would Nutt have been able to ride the money train to where Clemson is now? Let’s not forget this guy had everyone fooled that he was a rising star, even Saban who recommended him as his replacement when he left LSU for the Dolphins.

Could Nutt have pulled it off? I feel like if a brainless snake oil salesman like Dabo can do it, Nutt could have done the same and maybe gotten things rolling even quicker.

Nutt would have had a few good seasons then tanked the program after getting a 5 year extension and a pay raise

I think Nutt would have been killer at a powerhouse honestly. Does anyone think he's all that different from Les? He can work a locker room.

Houston Nutt would be great cast as a low budget porn producer.

Idk.
Dabo is a dumb, but Reverend Freeze wasn’t the brightest bulb either, and he still knew how to run a good southern baptist style cheating scheme.

I don’t think Nutt was too good at cheating.

If Clemson ever gets The Reverend though, god damn we’re all in trouble.
Clemson will be the trashiest, most unlikeable program in history, but they will win some games.

Houston Nutt did not give enough of a shite about coaching to ever build a powerhouse program

He isn't brainless. He has cultivated that image. Everything he does and says is in furtherance of it. And in the South, particularly the SC Upstate, it works like a charm.

Les is a much better recruiter and had better coaching staffs. Nutt almost kept the same ones for 10 years. He kept the ones that needed to go and fired the ones that didn't need it.

He would destroy a powerhouse. He didn't like recruiting very hard. He didn't bother going to more sought after recruits. Instead went after recruits with grade issues or had troubled pasts. As a result he had a lot of thugs on his teams.

He is different from Les as he never had the work ethic to be elite. Les gets a lot of crap but he just didn't do nothing and LSU won 11 games without something going on. The only thing similar is both are terrible game managers but Miles recruiting can offset that weakness. Nutt's recruiting strategies have always bit him in the arse.

He can work a locker for a bout two games a year. So club dub for the week then a hangover on a Saturday. Nutt was blown out 16 times during his tenure and had numerous ugly offensive performances.

Nutt could've done well at a place that "recruits itself," i.e. not Old Mrs. Nutt would've been much better at LSU than Piles, he won three straight against that idiot from 2007-09 and it could've easily been more (safety in 2005, kickoff return in 2006 and 2010 was down to the wire).

No he wouldn't do any better than Miles. Actually he would underachieve even more . Schools don't recruit themselves because coaches still have to go out and get the players and if they are lazy, the results on the field will show.

Maybe. Nutt even lost some of the few blue chip players AR produces I believe (Tuberville being from there took some maybe?)

Nutt lost some recruits that went out of state but a lot of them were busts. It wasn't a lot but it was enough to irritate most hog fans.

There are some coaches that just fit their program/fanbase.

I'd say Orgeron and Dabo are two of the best examples.

Bammers talk about Dabo coming to Tuscaloosa post Saban but I dont see how it'd work or why he'd want to.

Correct. Nutt was doing fine from 98-02. His ego was in check and his approval ratings were good. But after the 03 season, it shifted. He flirted with the Nebraska job in early 04 but turned it down because deep down he wasn't good enough to meet those expectations. So he used the situation to get a raise from Arkansas. I wish he got on that plane as we would be better off. But the dumbasses on the hill wanted him to stay.

I think he got a raise and the infamous two year pass from the mess which he already created in that botched 2000 class.
