As Frank Broyles, who was a gigantic A-hole, don't get me wrong, once said "He has to have a running QB to make his system work."
If Gus has a good running QB at the helm of his offense then Auburn is just about as scary as you will find. When he tries to plug a drop back passer into his offense he's screwed.
You don't run an Air Raid offense with an option QB. You don't run an option offense with an Air Raid QB.

I think splitting the road games was useful.
We play Bama and UGA at home in odd years.
I like the west division games to be later than the non division games.
I’d like to see 6 weeks of division only football to finish each season.

I agree 100% Arksulli.
That is just Gus in a nutshell.

Losing to Minnesota last year probably ended the season on a bad note.
There's no probably about it. That bowl game was a televised abortion.

Minnesota - 31
Auburn - 24
...with some very bad decisions on Auburn's part.
Very frustrating, but New Years and a month after playing your last game really gets to a Freshman QB (Nix) after an insanely hard schedule.
Still frustrating nonetheless.

He wasn't great, but it was the defense that really shite the bed and was surprising. Minnesota manhandled that team on both sides of the ball.

Gus is riding a team Gene Chizik built from 7 years ago. He is an overpaid Kevin Sumlin.
$7,000,000 for 4.83 losses per year over the last 6 seasons? Not good.

They (Minnesota) also went 11-2 and ended up at #10.
I have to give credit to them, no matter how much we absolutely sucked in that game.
We played a very hard schedule last year with something like (vs. #1, #3, #4, #7, #10).
I don't have time at the moment to look it up.
But, it was insanely and unnecessarily brutal.
Gus getting Auburn at #16 was pretty good, given the circumstances with Nix.
Our defense was awesome throughout the year. You can't put that game on them, imo.

I would have to see Texas A&M's schedule(s) over that period to make an honest and factual statement.
I know that A&M has lost more than Auburn in that time-frame with a joke of a schedule, just out of pure memory.

He's like Les Miles, only less successful.

The only question is "do you believe he will put Auburn in position to win the NC in the next 4 years? He has fone well but if the answer is no then he is not good enough

You have to ask yourself what the alternative would be. If you’d end up like Tennessee then it’s acceptable. If you’re missing out on being LSU then it’s not. Those are the two extremes of getting rid of successful coaches in a stale program.
I think Auburn is doing just fine even though they consistently underachieve at least once or twice a year.

Covid is going to keep Gus around another year regardless. So our luck he will go 6-6 and we’ll be forced to keep him still

I would have fired him for the Birmingham Bowl appearance. That was one of the most pitiful and embarrassing moments in Auburn history. They danced around with that trophy.

I think Gus has done a decent job, but he shouldn't have been given so much money and also been made impossible to fire through buyouts. His 2017 season was pivotal. Winning 10 and the West was a shot in the arm, but he finished with 8, 7, and 8 wins the three years prior to that. He finished again with 8 wins in 2018. He's doing alright, but there's this odd sense that his wheels could come off and he has been riding the line for an uncomfortable amount of time given his tenure's length.
His offense isn't exactly cutting edge anymore, either. I don't think he has it in him for another NC run without phenoms at the skill positions. I think Auburn should start demanding more 10+ win seasons from him if he's going to be getting paid like seven million dollars a year or something retarded.
We've seen how quick Auburn is to cut a coach down to size. Terry Bowden did a great job at Auburn and was fired halfway through his very first lackluster season. Tommy Tuberville had basically an identical record to Gus, and he was fired after his first losing season in nine years. Chizik was fired two years after winning the NC. Personally, as soon as it's financially feasible, I think they should let him go and then hire Bill Clark. That guy could win a championship at Auburn, and he's apparently going to stay in Alabama all his life.

inal AP poll for Auburn under Gus:
2013 - Not Ranked
2014 - #6
2015 - #6
2016 - Not Ranked
2017 - #12
2018 - #9
2019 - #16
Those are all preseason rankings, not final rankings. He's horrifically missed the mark like half the time.

To be fair, Cam Newton and Gus Malzahn at OC were the reason for Chizik’s success.
