Lose in the NCAA. Easily.

I'd argue it's actually more embarrassing to lose in the first round of the tournament than to not make the tournament altogether.
and you would lose that argument to anyone with a pulse. your post proves that you are clearly college basketball illiterate. one of the worst ive seen.
winning the nit is more historically significant in the fricking 50s. we are 60 years past that.

Disagree. I wouldn't equivocate number of games played with experience, especially in this instance in which the team is likely playing a high seed anyway. The experience from playing a really good team in the NCAA tourney trumps an NIT pretty easily.

sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but-
NCAA's easy. Think of it this way- a really good player can mean about 5 more wins; LSU without Johnny O'Bryant might be sitting at 11 instead of 16 right now.
Let's say I'm a kid who thinks I can make that difference coming in. If I go to a team that lost in the first round of the NCAAs, then I can help make that team maybe a 4 or 5 seed, and a legit Sweet Sixteen contender right away. If I go to a team that went to the NIT, then I might only improve the team to a bubble team.
NIT success isn't about young talent developing, because that talent will be pretty disappointed about not making the big dance. It's more about upperclassmen finishing out their careers with wins, and that doesn't translate well to the next season.

I would take the NIT, Simply becasue I like to watch my team play, not matter how awful our offense is, I still like to watch them play. Nit would just be more games i could watch.

Regardless, I would rather win the NIT than lose in the first round of the big tourney. I'm sure there are others that share my opinion, including a few coaches if given the choice and extra tourney play.
There are legitimate arguments on both sides of the question, so it's pretty ridiculous that you are being such a prick about it. OP asked the question, and I gave my response... I'd rather win the NIT than be a first-round exit in the tourney.
Everyone realizes the NIT is not the real deal, but regardless winning the NIT is nothing to scoff at, it's a nice accomplishment for a program and a nice way to end the season, one of only 2 tourney teams in the country to end the season with a win.

For Auburn basketball? I would consider either scenario a victory...... Hell, losing in the first round of the NIT should be considered a victory for Auburn.

Making the big dance and it's not close. That's something to be proud of.
The NIT needs to go away and I think it will be non-existent in 10 years.
If you don't make the NCAA tourney there shouldn't be a fall back like the NIT. Imagine if they continue to let more and more teams in the NCAA tourney, there won't be enough shitty teams to even have a NIT.

honestly this year i would rather LSU win the NIT. good tourney experience for the returning players next season
but in most cases it would be lose the first round of NCAA

Since we made it to the Garden the year before last I will say I felt better then than I felt being irrelevant at the end of Tourney day one. Only 2 teams win their last game of the season and our team is still young.. and could use extra games. I'd only take a sweet 16 appearence over making it to the gardens final.
The only thing exciting about making the NCAAs and losing the 1st game is the sunday before when you were selected.. nothing more humiliating than a 1st round loss... usually folks just say ou had no business there in the 1st place.
NIT Champs for me!
