Oliver Luck: XFL will consider taking players before eligible for the NFL Draft

“I wouldn’t rule it out,” Luck said. “Nor would I rule out taking a player who played a year of college football and let’s say isn’t eligible academically, which happens. Or a player who is two years out of college, and is transferring, and would have to sit out a year. A lot of guys don’t want to. . . . We are in that position to be able to take players who wouldn’t be eligible to play in the NFL.”

In basketball, some teams have had decent success running a program built completely on one and dones, but in football? It’s impossible. There’s too many positions and it’s too much more of a team sport.

Saban has built Alabama on the level of talent that would go to the NFL after a year or two if they could, especially to escape Saban’s sourpuss that much faster.

Once Saban loses his ability to hold elite tier talent hostage for 3 years, does Alabama lose its stranglehold on the SEC?

would be nice to see CFB go back to being an amateur sport, Bama would still find a way to break the format tho.

It's funny when people don't understand that college football talent is relative.

Take the top 100 players in college football every year and move them to the XFL.

Guess what happens? The next 100 guys will be the new top100 college football players and the schools that recruit well are going to get them and so on.

If you think the top100 players are just gonna disappear and Nick Saban's gonna be sitting around like "well shite, I got nobody to recruit", then please share some of what you are smoking.

No. They've still won more championships than anyone else in recent history. Top recruits want to win. To put themselves in the best position to win, they will play for Saban, Dabo, or Fisher. The three coaches who have been there before.

No. Bama will just pay them more. Until these 5* kids realize that 5*s are making Saban and not the other way around then they will continue to pile on the bench at Bama. The ones that do make it to the NFL had the talent to start with and were expected to end up there before they ever went to bama.

It will be other teams snagging just enough of those extra 5*s from Saban to slowly bring his teams down to relying on his coaching to finish him.

Saban will finish Saban. Pride comes before the fall and he is about to tumble down the other side of the mountain.

Also, the XFL may be thinking about this b/c the AAF is making it's player sign 3 year deals that will block them from leaving unless it's to play in the NFL.

quote:

League co-founder Bill Polian, an ESPN NFL analyst, said the league will give players three-year, non-guaranteed contracts worth $250,000 each.

Players can leave the league, which is set to kick off Feb. 9, to go to the NFL. Polian said it's currently unclear whether a player's rights will revert back to the AAF after a three-year period expires or if the clock stops ticking on a team's three-year rights when a player gets "called up" to the big time.

Unless the XFL can get close to paying what the NFL does, then top recruits will still pursue the NFL.

I could see the XFL hurting quality depth on college teams as somewhat decent backups who likely never get drafted may opt for a 6 figure salary in the XFL instead

I don't think anyone should be forced to go to college of they choose not to.

Except that the "next" 100 guys aren't guaranteed NFL stars and won't be willing to put up with Saban's shite to up their stock. They'll go to a more enjoyable program that won't ruin their bodies.

No.A kid would be idiotic to jump a year early for a 75k to 100k non guaranteed contract.

Training, coaching and preparation for the NFL are worth far more than what could be provided by the XFL

This would just hurt the sport as a whole if kids bought in. Don’t see it happening though.

There’s parity in CFP; any of these teams could make the playoff:

Clemson
Bama
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Washington
LSU
UGA
Miami
A&M
Texas
Notre Dame
Florida
Michigan
Penn St.

Not UCF though.
