like Phillip Fulmer? Or Ray Tanner? Former coaches actually don't typically make very good ADs.

Their previous AD was a Natty winning coach.

They've lost 2 in a row to Tennessee teams coached by a guy who wasn't aware of what Asparagus was. That mixed in with VOLS routinely throttling them on the hardwood (3-7 in the last 10) since joining makes for threads like these.

Sad really

Interesting take on Tennessee's national irrelevance

Well Mizzou is set at QB with Bazelek for several years

And if he slumps or gets injured Horn is the next guy up. In Knoxville he would be one of 4 potentially coming in.

No, tennessee is done. They don't have a recruiting base and they can't dip into Georgia anymore. Outback bowl is the pinnacle for them from now on.

They are done as long as they stay a house divided. They are staring down the NZAA barrel and that is going to postpone progress even more. But no historically successful power 5 team is done unless they insist on it with bad decisions followed by more bad decisions.

I get your point and it makes sense but a lot of "coach type" ADs don't know shite about the business side.

Well their new AD hired a search firm to hire the coach from the school he just came from

If the corn nubbers are Nebraska, they are the ones that keep insisting on Scott Frost.

If Tennessee is Nebraska, what is Mizzou? Indiana, Illinois, Perdue? I get Alabama and Georgia fans trolling us but Mizzou? Mizzou is one of the few teams Pruitt actually beat ??

They don't have a recruiting base

This is becoming less and less true every year. The 2022 class in Tennessee is probably going to end up with 14 or 15 4/5* recruits. UTk's biggest problem is that they have been pretty consistently terrible for all but a few of the last ~15 years. Even in Alabama's decade of darkness we won the conference once and had another couple of 10 win seasons. UTk's last 10 win season was under Fatlock in 2007. The current recruiting class was like 3 years old in 2007 and has no actual recollection that Danny Ainge is Erik Ainge's uncle. At this point there just isn't anything to differentiate them from South Carolina and Kentucky in the mind of a 17 year old, much less Alabama, UGA, Clemson, and Ohio State.

Weird troll. QB is one of the few position groups in Knoxville with a loaded cupboard.

Then why did Tennessee continuously start JG at QB? Seems like a team with a “loaded cupboard” at QB wouldn’t be trotting JG out there. Harrison Bailey is unproven and I doubt many recruits are scared of Hooker.

They'll be a middle SEC East team with the occasional overachieving year. That is Tennessee football now.

That's the point - It's a numbers game. You have 1 quarterback on campus in Bazelak that can throw beyond 10 yards unless Robinson did a 180. We have Bailey, Salters, Mauer, and the VT transfer all competing for the starting spot as it is. The 2 with the most potential of that group are a Sophmore and Freshman. Why come here and be the 5th guy competing for 1 spot when other Universities provide more opportunities for playing time

So how can teams sign 5*s when they already have 5*s on the roster? Alabama comes to mind. Your statement is incorrect.
