Will Rupp Arena have to be renamed...

Is this were we are going?
Rupp drew criticism late in his career for failing to recruit African-Americans and only one black ever played for him, 7-foot Tom Payne. Though Rupp talked of recruiting blacks during the 1960s, Kentucky was one of the last major basketball schools to integrate its program. Many branded him a racist, though others thought he was merely reflecting his environment.
On the positive side for Rupp, he started a black player in his first year of coaching high school basketball in Illinois and selected the first African-American player (Don Harksdale) for a U.S. Olympic basketball team.
On the other hand, Rupp reportedly didn't recruit Connie Hawkins, the nation's best high school player in 1960, when he learned Hawkins was an African-American. He supposedly once vowed that blacks would never play for him at Kentucky. But he did relent and Payne appeared in the coach's next-to-last season (1970-71). OLD ESPN Article

Big Blue History actually has a pretty comprehensive article on whether he was or was a product of the time.
What we do know is he tried to recruit other black players in the state who ended up places like Louisville or with other Metro Conference teams because they didn’t want to travel to the South during the Jim Crow era. He also coached black players in HS. He’d also often refer those kids who didn’t want to play in the South to fellow coaches in other parts of the country.

The Movie Glory Road that dramatized the UTEP run to the Final Four and its showdown with Kentucky led by Adolph Rupp, the way that Rupp was portrayed in that Movie came from a former Kentucky Player - Pat Riley former HC of the "Showtime Lakers"
So if Rupp was portrayed unfairly in that movie it came from one of his former white players as Riley served as a Technical Consultant on that movie
So yeah, snatch his name off of the Arena and get a Corp Sponsor like everyone else maybe they can raise some funds to save some welfare non Revenue Sport

His name should definitely stay on the arena.

It's not "will". It's when.

Rupp was a white supremacist dumbass, which is why he got his arse kicked by Texas Western lol. Recruited white instead of best players overall.

So you have no clue. Got it.

quote:Good luck recruiting black players when you have to play road games in the deep south at a time when they're safety couldn't be guaranteed, mothers love hearing that. At the time no SEC basketball team had a single black player, I believe the ACC had only one.

Was Rupp racist? I have no flippin idea, but the country in general certainly was.

The question is not if it SHOULD be renamed (understand both sides, but I would not rename), the question is WILL it be renamed. IMHO, it will be renamed.

Who is going to make it be renamed though? I don't see UK caving into that anytime soon. Especially when there is no actual proof that he was a racist.

Rupp recruited black players before it was cool.
But yes, it will be renamed for john wall or Anthony davis.

Personally I'm hoping for Makers Mark Arena. We could even cap it in blue wax.

If they take Rupp's name off it, then they need to rename it the "Happy Chandler Arena."
Hell, it's not even a part of UK's campus. It's a private edifice attached to the Hyatt Regency. Doesn't even belong to UK.
