Why would someone give Vidal Alexander 180,000 dollars to sign with their school?

I know there is proof that it happened but I dont get it. He was the 174th ranked player in his class. Why not go after a higher ranked player? Lol
He ended up being a 7th round draft pick.

1. It was a money laundering/embezzeling scheme and monies went THROUGH people and not just TO people.
2. Apparently, that $180K was funneled through Vadal Alexander's father's business in Georgia at the very end of or even after Vadal left LSU. It was not money to try to get Vadal to sign with LSU.

Higher ranked players get way more than $180k these days.

You must speak in simplistic terms. These people are really slow, and don’t understand a word of what you are saying.

You don’t understand Louisiana.
- $10k went to the father of Alexander;
- $40k went to the Louisiana State contact with the father (he was the first cousin of an assistant coach);
- $40k went to the assistant to the AD via his brother-in-law’s wife’s sister who was appointed assistant director of OLOL by the Governor;
- $40k was paid to the contractor who provided the cell phones for the big-arse offer through his exclusive deal with LSU (his father is a big donor to the University and to the Governor’s campaign); and
- $10k went to a slush fund at the athletic foundation controlled by the AD;
- $40k is unaccounted for.
Just the cost of doing business in Louisiana.

And if you read the entire story, most of that money was funneled back to the dude who stole it with only a little vig taken out for the guy's trouble in laundering it.

Exactly. It obviously wasn't for recruiting purposes. I mean, the top 3 ranked Louisiana recruits (according to 247) for 2012 left Louisiana (Landon Collins, Shiro Davis, and Denzel Devall). Guess those prospects just weren't wanted.
If the money was for recruiting, Funes for some reason, wanted the #15 player in Georgia, who committed to LSU in October 2011 and had enrolled in mid-January 2012.

Nobody outside of Louisiana cares about that. Let them have their fun.

“Oh but but this is only the tip of the iceberg! But FOR REAL this time!”

If you mean how did Funes find him "out of all the dirty businesses in the country," well, I'd assume he met James Alexander through some event, game, or function where James was invited due to being Vadal's family and it progressed from there. I've seen James Alexander described as a "self-employed entrepreneur" so that might have seemed like a good target for what Funes was scheming to do to OLOL. Someone who works for themselves and could help conceal the embezzlement and possibly launder some money back to Funes.
I'd assume Funes met Rohan's family members in a similar manner. Perhaps they didn't have a business which would explain why in their cases, Funes submitted vouchers for home medical care and other expenses for a supposed Children's Hospital patient. They couldn't be people who did work for OLOL and make it look somewhat convincing, so Funes make it seem like the money was going toward patient care.

Given inflation, we paid similar for undrafted Albert Means. Seems like whomever LSU booster related got more for their money. Bet he won't die falling up stairs.

You'll care when LSU is on probation with a 2 year postseason ban and scholarship reduction

Dealing with the OLOL stuff? Doubt it
