Probably because Auburn, Alabama is such a world renowned destination that they felt it would improve their image

Auburn was not just a technical university anymore. A very old term that include vocational training.

Wanted to change their name and they felt that East Alabama Correctional Facility just didn't have the ring to it that Auburn University did.
