Why is American Football so popular in the United States?

I guess this is sort of SEC-related.
If you look at the rest of the world, the most popular sports primarily consist of soccer, cricket, basketball, and a few others sprinkled here and there. However, in the United States it is american football.
The typical "american" sports are baseball and NASCAR (at least in the south).
So why is football so dang popular?

So was basketball. So was NASCAR.
e. It is also argued that baseball might have originated in the USA as well.
double e. nevermind. It appears most people think it originated in England.

Because we like gladiator type sports.
See the rise of MMA.
Or our off and on love affair with boxing.
We are the modern day Roman Empire.
Pax Americana.

Football costs tons of money to do it right and makes a lot of money when you do it right. Combine that with the ever present analogy of war and it's the perfect American sport.

Lots of starts and stops play into our short attention spans.

I hate to watch soccer because of all the flopping. It pisses me off to no end.

Basketball/Soccer = Cheap, therefore more people can play.
Cricket isn't in the same league as Basketball, Baseball, American Football or Soccer
Also Football is more popular due to the fact that it combines mental and physical aspects to sports (If your'e 7'0" you can millions as a Basketball player and be dumb as a brick).
Also it's exciting to watch, every game you know that there's likely to bone rattling hits, bomb throws, gutsy runs or something that will truly wow the crowd. Opposed to sitting through 3 hours of soccer and realizing there's a very good chance that there won't be 1 single goal scored.

This is a great question, and its one that Ive been pondering for a while. I want to see our football in the Olympics, but the rest of the world isnt interested in the game....Which brings us to the real question: How can we merge American Football with Rugby?

To me, part of the appeal of American football is that it involves almost every type of athleticism that the human body is capable of. It's not like soccer where every dude is the same body type. You need huge strongmen just as much as you need small fast guys and guys who can throw.
In that regard it's the ultimate team sport.

this, plus we have an ocean between us and the rest of the world..
soccer was invented in england (right?) and easily spread through europe... then spread to the rest of the world through colonialism.... american football was not.
