Why hasn't Auburn claimed the 2004 MNC?

I'm not a fan of retroactively claiming titles, but
a)this was relatively recent
b) if the NC was vacated, it doesn't seem right that there should be no one listed in the record books
c) there's no other clear runner-up. All due respect to Utah, but they played one of the worst BCS teams ever in Pitt. Auburn played one single score game all season

I see that Tuberville has advocated for claiming it, but it doesn't appear the university/AD itself has made much effort and I'm not sure why

Wouldn't the other team that actually made the NCG have a better claim if this is how it really worked?

No, they got there arse spanked. AU should claim it, but Jay Jacobs thought he was taking the high road by not doing it. That is what happens when you hire a dumbass as an AD.

Auburn would have gotten smoked too. No one was beating USC that night.

The BCS wasn't an NCAA tournament like in basketball. It was just the most prestigious of the formulas recognized by the NCAA. It appears that Michigan will make no effort to claim Louisville's 2013 NCAA title but they couldn't have anyway LINK /

This not like the Olympics. A silver medal does not turn to gold when the official winner is ruled a cheat. Michigan still lost that game in the eyes of the NCAA. Louisville did not forfeit the win. They just … also lost.

There is no winner.

Which is why I said if this was a real thing. There was no winner of the NCG. But, if there was going to be a team crowned the champion, it shouldn't be a team that wasn’t even in the game.

Idk it seems like Auburn had more future productive pros than USC and they would've had a huge homefield advantage (Oklahoma did too) in Miami

Because they played 3 teams with a winning record.

Off the top of my head, Auburn beat LSU, UGA, Tennessee (2x) and VT. Bama went to a bowl, but yall may have finished 6-6 or 6-7. Can't remember

Yep, wasn't counting VT, but I suppose I should if we're considering a retroactive claim.

4 teams with a winning record, including the bowl game.

Not our fault everyone except LSU was shite. Plus we got boned in scheduling and had to put the citadel on last minute.

Because USC would have beat their arse just as bad as they did OU, probably worse

I don't disagree with that, but the legitimate excuse doesn't fix the crummy schedule.

USC vacated so they're not in the discussion... But Imo while those USC teams were elite, but they didn't play many elite defenses. ESPN kept showing Reggie Bush's highlights against Fresno non-stop then USC played Texas (top 10 defense) and he was a non-factor other than the lateral fumble

OU would have beat Auburn’s arse too. Auburn has zero legitimate claim to 04

He averaged 6.3 yards per carry and also had 95 receiving yards in that game.

Oklahoma up 55 points. No chance the number one defense in the country gives up near that much.
