Why does Alabama still lie about national titles?

I mean,
If everyone counted them the way Alabama does over the last 150 years, there would be over 250 claims.
Tell me I am wrong here:
Notre Dame got too much respect from the northeastern media types all the way up until the 1990s when the SEC came out and became king.
But in the 80s Bama went all in, then miraculously doubled down on the lie.

This deserves to finally be asked.

There would be a lot more than 250 claims. I even remember seeing a post once on how AU could rightfully claim 9 more I think it was. I am glad they don't tho

I don’t think it was nine but Auburn claimed several more a few years ago- it seemed they were kind of floating the idea with the public. Hilarity ensued and they backtracked to the current number.

Prior to 2009, this was a legit debate. Now, not so much. Alabama doesn’t have 17 titles. Take those away. Alabama has 12 POLL era titles, still more than anyone else, poll era or pre-poll and poll era.
Everyone wants to be Alabama, even this Sooner fan. Conference titles are nice. But NCs are nicer.

Well, I think LSU has 4...about 1957 with the Chinese Communists, about 2003 and 2007 thanks to Alabama’s coach, and last year when they apparently beat Alabama 44-16.
