Why do we make fun of 2nd nationally and not high NCAAT placings?

Say you’ve got team A reach the final 4 and lose and team B is pretty shite but ends up winning the NIT.
Why should the former be celebrated? Why hang the banners? Is it because some schools might have some empty trophy cases if so? What the above says to me is team A is basically the worst of the best and can’t get it done on the big stage and team B took care of business.
