Why do assistant coaches leave for the first head coach offer they get?

As a Bama fan year after year we see coordinator after coordinator leave for the first head coach opportunity they get.. For the life of me I can't figure out why they don't wait for the right opportunity. There is only a couple of coordinators that turned down multiple jobs year after year and waiting for the perfect job.. You might know him Kirby Smart, he took advantage of his situation and learned as much as possible from Saban.. Of course when he went to Georgia and started running his program exactly like Saban I was mad, but why would you not? The reason he has been one of the few coordinators in the last decade to be able to take Saban's model to another school and be successful is because he stayed long enough to learn every aspect of the program. If Kirby would of jumped at a head coach job that wasn't the perfect fit there is a possibility he would of been fired as a head coach..

If another company offered you 5x your current salary would you turn it down to work for your boss that you may or may not like, or would you accpet it to go run the department?
People need to realize situations like Kirby's are by far the exception and not the rule. Kirby is a true down south georgia boy from a football family that palyed at UGA and was destined to end up at UGA at some point. Him biding his time til the job came open is not going to be the same story as someone else.

Maybe they want to escape being under Oscar the Grouch's thumb.
They go to Alabama for a fast lane to HC position

With the money head coaches are making these days it's worth any risk.
Also, most coaches are naturally alpha males and think they can succeed anywhere.

seriously, this is like the biggest no brainer question of all time.
"hey Mr. Mid-30s year old man, I know you make a pretty good income in the low 6 figures to support your stay at home wife and 4 kids, but would you really want to leave that to be a head coach and make $3Million per year and set up your family for generations? YOu know you could stay and learn some more from your current boss right?"

There are 3 approaches.
1) some guys arent cut out for p5. They take the other job because of the pay, promotion, and lifestyle.
2) some guys dont mind taking a stab at a p5 job. And if they fail, they return as a former HC now as an assistant (often a pay raise for the experience, better cache' recruiting, and even bigger demand for services i.e. a young head coach could lean on him which creates a bidding war.
3) some people are meticulous and perfectionists and will only make the move when conditions are perfect. Kirby didnt take the Georgia job when it opened. He told Georgia that he was going to kill them every year in South Carolina unless the AD made a lot of changes. And the AD believed him and caved.

Right. What do you have to lose? You win you get paid. You lose you still get paid and likely will have another shot one day.

This is why the muschamp comparison was always so stupid. One stayed and learned. The other ran off.

Will is a great coordinator but a bad HC. Really glad to have him back at UGA. He knows defense and having him and Kirby run Georgia’s defense will yield incredible results.

It’s not like Boom was an assistant for a short amount of time though. He was a DC at LSU, the Dolphins, Texas, and Auburn before finally taking the HC at Florida when he was about 40 years old. And he’s made a ton of money over the years. His lack of learning isn’t the issue IMO. Some guys like him just aren’t cut out to be a head coach

kirby also went to a school that was willing to put up the shiny coins to make it happen. Not just his pay but everything else involved to right the ship in athens.

Kirby also was going back to his dream job and alma mater. He waited for that job to open and took it like everyone expected him to

Kirby made Sabah
Look at Sabah’s defenses since Kirby left... Butt. Cheekz.

Hugh Freeze is making $3-4 million at Liberty. LIBERTY!!!
It's all about the $$$ first. Success and championships come second until you've accumulated millions in generational wealth...for coaching kids playing a game.

I was impressed with how many jobs Billy Napier (apparently) turned down or took himself out of contention before saying yes to UF. (I understand he was head coach at a smaller school but it's the same principle).
