Why didn't L8U take the ball when they won the coin toss?

Get the ball first and limit Bama's 1st half possessions. Surely Corch O (as in 0) was not dumb enough to think his 600 yard giving up D could stop Bama.

It was mind boggling to me. Your best player is out for the first half and you're going to choose to give Bama the ball?

Gary actually made a good point as to why they should have taken the ball, not that it would have mattered

Honestly, that first drive of the game could not have gone any better for LSU time wise. Bama chewed of 5 minutes in the first only to end the drive with a punt.

Because he knew his 600 yd giving up D could stop Bama on THAT possession.......and he was right. Genuis move.

I don’t even remember the last time LSU or Alabama asked for the ball

cause they knew that prissy fingered qb would get a 3 and out. They had a better chance of preventing BAMA from getting a TD on the first drive than they had getting a first down.

Because he had a better chance at getting a stop than scoring a TD on the opening drive?

Time wise, perhaps. However, what it actually showed was that Bama’s offense could do whatever it wanted - right off the bat. It took 3 major unforced errors to keep us out of the endzone that drive. I think that set the tone for the rest of the game. LSU’s defense was immediately on their heels, and they knew it was going to be a long night.

Put your best unit on the field first, then get the ball after half.
Let's be honest, Bama likely gets the ball around midfield after a 3 and out otherwise.

I think LSU offense going 3 and out for their first series would have set the tone as well.

I didn't understand this either.
The refs even handed the coin toss to LSU with the fake double headed coin, and coach O still messed that up.

Good call. I'm pretty sure this is the reason we lost.

Had Delpit's cheapshot on Tua landed on its mark vs. Hitting him in the nuts... it would have looked like a phenomenal choice with Mac Jones having to finish the game.

That was a cheapshot? Your own players said they couldn't hear the whistle.

Any defensive player getting a shot at a still standing QB with ball in his hands hits him high to attempt to force a fumble.
Tua is left handed and was facing Delpit with the ball in hand chest high. Delpit dove straight into Tua's lower body. Tua managed to get his right leg back and shift body position just before impact. If he hadn't, Delpit hits his right leg and or hyperextends Tuas injured leg.
There is/was no reason to go low in that scenario with Tua standing still. It looks pretty blatant.

Strange, I heard Gary bashing the frick out of him for the decision for exactly the same reason as the OP. I honestly thought I was reading a verbatim quote from him as I read it.

I guess you don't watch much football. You can't go high anymore. Coaches teach defensive player to target the midsection, which is exactly where Delpit hit. He certainly didn't dive at Tua's knees like you're seeming to say.
