He went 1-5 to start the season, but was 46-12 up to that point.

Tried to win with recruiting Spurrier and daddy's leftover recruits in Florida after winning with Dye's studs for a couple years.

He was recruiting terribly for one Once he ran out of Dye's players things went downhill.

Plus he had a lot of shite going-on off the field.

He was having affair with Bobby Lowder's daughter. LINKBasically the same kind of shady things that have been going on in Lee County for decades. At least since Pat Dye's pants sat at the bottom of Lake Martin.

Diddling the daughter of a man with power, when that same man thinks you're a chode, isn't an environment conducive to success.

Bowden was a hell of an offensive coach and probably should have just been an OC in the SEC. Dye had recruited at an elite level and Bowden stepped into a situation where AU had top 5 talent but just needed a modernized offense (which he brought). If you rewatch his AU teams they were actually running RPOs back in the early 90's and the passing concepts were ahead of its time for the SEC. What ended Terry was his refusal to recruit the areas in which AU had dominated (Atlanta and Mobile) and took on 10-12 players in each class that FSU passed on or had too many off the field issues to sign. The moment his last Dye carry over (which was Dameyune Craig who had commited to Dye in 92) graduated he was left with no talent or thugs and things imploded.

He was actually almost fired behind the scenes in 1997 during the week of Mississippi St game. AU was #6 and 8-1 and were shut out at home 20-0. Rumors of parties all week and sexual relations with prominent boosters daughters as well as consistent cocaine abuse came to light. He was also a public drunk.

my dad was an auburn man ... told me a story after i'd graduated from college in '92 ... i grew up/attended a 3A school in west central alabama ... he was at a game one friday night and noticed 3 auburn personnel/coaches at the game to scout ... there weren't any 5* players on the team ... maybe a 4* and a few 3* ... he knew enough about recruiting to know there shouldn't be but one scout at the game, and certainly not 3 ... as he said it, "someone wasn't running the ship" ...
