Why did LSU hire O in the first place?

And they give him a huge buyout??
We know it's not because of his resumé. Is it because of his relationships with the players? Not even a team like Troy would hire him, what gives? Why would Alleva even think it would be a good idea to name him HC?

Who else were they realistically going get? Charlie Strong?

He is a great recruiter and brings in talent. He just isn't a good HC.

They realistically could have gotten a lot of good coaches. Lets not sit here and act like there was absolutely no competent coach available out there after Herman went to Texas.

It is all about timing. I said after Bama fired Mike Price the dumbest thing they did was hire Shula. The thing to have done would be to promote Joe Kines and then hire the following year. Sanctions were pretty much over for Bama and it would have been time to rebuild. Both Butch Davis and Steve Spurrier came out of the NFL that year and would have been great hires. Having said that, I would still go through the misery of Shula to get to where we are today.

Georgia will look like genius' when all is said and done if Smart keeps going they way he has UGA headed. Funny thing is, Smart had been talking to South Carolina (spring meetins/SEC Media days) for a couple years because he knew that Spurrier's time at USCe was drawing to a close. His "plan" was to try and get the USCe job, show he knew how to be a head coach and then try to follow Saban at Bama. That was his ultimate goal. Now that he is at a big time program and his alma mater to boot, I think he is content to build them into a great program again.

UGA cut bait and started on their future and it looks like a great plan so far.

Would have been a much better hire. Signed #18 USF Bulls.

This. I don't understand why a decent coach couldn't have been hired, even strong would have LSU playing decent.

The buyout is the thing that makes no sense. No program in the country is going to hire him away from LSU.

They really do need to fire Alleva. His handling of that whole situation is a disgrace.

I feel like South Carolina was sooooooo close to getting Kirby's signature, too. UGA was very smart to dump Richt to secure Kirby.

Then Ray Tanner panicked and hired Muschamp.

Joe got his feelings hurt when Herman used LSU to get more out of Texas. So Alleva literally went into Microsoft word and did a search and replace for Herman and changed to O
