They get good kickers, he just stresses them out so much they get in their head and start shanking kicks.

He gets the talented kickers, he just has no idea how to handle them. Kickers are fickle creatures, he can’t be an a-hole to them like he is the rest of the team.

They got the #1 kicker in the country last year, and we got the #2 ranked one. Ours worked out, theirs wasn’t even in the game last night, I don’t think.

Bama is done. They won’t win 4 games next year.

Most kickers aren’t “football players”. You can’t motivate them by screaming at them, shaming them, etc. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, the best way to handle a kicker is to let them live on their own little island of arse pats and praise.

And Saban only does things the Saban way.

One of my friends got drafted by the Packers same year as Flynn and Flynn told him a story about Chris Jackson. Apparently Jackson missed a kick before halftime and Saban toasted him in front of the whole team yelling to pull out his nutsack to prove that he had a pair over and over.

Saban has no idea how to sympathize with players.

I was on staff with the team in 03’ and I distinctly remember Nick Saban yelling at a ST player at practice. Paraphrase: “If you don’t do your job, you’re F’n with my family’s life.”

There's another potential explanation for Saban's kicker troubles... most teams have a dedicated holder that practices with the kicker every day.

Saban wants his starting QB (what he views as his "best ball handler") holding. This means that the kicker/holder team get far fewer reps together since the starting QB typically has more important things to work on during practice.

Note that it was this same philosophy of starting QB as holder that got Matt Mauck hurt on the fake FG at UF in '02.

I've got to think this philosophy has something to do with what is clearly now a pattern.

Cade York freshman kicker from LSU that bombed 2 fifty yarders against the wind last night was the #2 rated kicker in the nation coming out of high school. The #1 kicker signed with Alabama and was replaced by the guy that missed the field goal against Auburn.

He has only loved a couple players, and none were kickers.

They got the #1 ranked kicker in the country last year, but he has been out with a hip injury most of the year.

I think the kicker missing a kick scares the shut out of them knowing Saban is going to rip them a new one.
