Why aren’t there more Lion mascots ?

I mean even penn state can’t just have the single term Lions as their mascot. What is a nittany 
just compare the king of the jungle to the amount of tigers in the sports world 
I really can’t think of a single school called Lions 
, Maybe everyone looked at the Detroit lions and said were good 
I propose the Missouri Lions to ease the tiger confusion + make it a real Lion King mascot, not some weak arse little Aggie tiger like Truman...truman seems like he would be good at Broadway though

You have a point. Old Dominion, as an example, has a lion front and center as their mascot... and their teams are called the Monarchs.

There used to be two live ones on campus, but one died a year or so ago. Still cool to walk a mile down the road and see a lion though.

They used to be a DII power in football, as well.
The DII Heisman Equivalent was named for Harlon Hill who played there (Florence State at the time).
But, yes, the Lions on campus have always been cool. Hearing Leo roar and having it echo across campus and it's pocket of North Florence was pretty awesome when I was a kid.

Are mascots really needed? Why not just be Auburn or Georgia, etc.

Probably not completely serious, but I gotta say I sorta like the NFL Washington Football Team. I guess they're just going to refuse to name a new mascot.

Soccer teams do it. You can still have a battle cry or something like it.
