COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina named graduate transfer Collin Hill its starting quarterback Thursday afternoon, putting a significant punctuation on a months-long remaking of the Gamecocks offense.
Hill, a South Carolina native who spent the last four seasons playing for new Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo at Colorado State, beat out incumbent Ryan Hilinski, a sophomore and former Elite 11 finalist who not long ago was considered to be the future of the program if not its saving grace.
“I thought both guys had outstanding training camps. We can win with both guys, bottom line,” coach Will Muschamp said in a statement released by the school. “Ryan’s had a really good camp. Obviously, there was an advantage for Collin playing for Coach Bobo before. Schematically, there are some things that helped him, but we can win with both guys. We’ve got confidence in both guys.

Hilinski seems like a much more talented QB and Hill doesn't have an overly impressive resume either.

Hill came over with Bobo and knows the system already.

That USC O overall is looking rough. If this was a normal year, on paper it looks pretty bad. No idea why Bobo wasn’t approached about the UGA gig.

Hill was a 3 star prospect coming out of high school by rivals. He was ranked as the 20th best pro style QB.
His career college passing rating is 137 which would have placed him 5th in the conference last year.
Would have been in a tough battle for starting QB had he stayed at CSU with Patrick O'Brien.
A nice guy to have around since he is experienced and played in that offense but not an SEC starting caliber QB.

Recruiting. Bobo is hobbled (not just hobbled with 6 kids.

A little perplexing to chose him over Hilinski, he obviously has a much lower ceiling, is Boom trying to hold back the offense? It was putrid last year, Hilinski took his lumps as a true freshman for you, stick with him, dont tell him to take a seat and watch another mediocre QB in the mean time.
You would think Hill is the insurance policy if Hilinski cant pick things up since he at least knows the offense...but, yikes

Y'all laugh. But the NFL has called about three of our players thus far.. Corners Jaycee Horn, Izzy Mukaumu... And QB Collin Hill.

I have a hard time believing this

Ryan Hilinski is really, really good.
If you guys chase him away for Hill you'll sorely regret it. I would definitely be looking to teach up Ryan over Hill. Forget the system, that kid needs to play.

Here's hoping that Hill somehow becomes this season's Kyle Trask.

Hilinski will play. I mean if they could assign QB1 and QB1&1/4 I think that would more closely describe just how close this is.
Hill has 4 yrs in Bobo's offense and has apparently been just as impressive as Hilinski at practice and at scrimmages. I think the reasoning is allowing Hill to run it gives Ryan a chance to watch & learn. Hill knows this offense inside and out and from all reports his teammates believe in him. That isn't discounting Hilinski at all. I fully expect as the season progresses that Hilinski will transition to QB1 as he becomes more familiar and comfortable with the new scheme.
With all of the teams with new OCs installing new offenses loaded with players totally unfamiliar with the scheme and with extremely limited time to learn, don't you think they'd love to be in the position of having a QB who already knows the offense like the back of his hand? It's not a bad problem to have considering the situation.
