Who will be the first G5 team to get a major invite in the new round of realignment?

If the ACC strikes out with the big targets like Notre Dame, is there a chance they could go after Cincinnati?

Seems unlikely. The only real chance I see for G5 teams to move up is if the Big 12 stays in existence and tries to add Cincy, Memphis, UCF, USF and maybe Boise, BYU or San Diego State.

At that point, the "new" Big 12 would just be another G5 conference.

Outside of a reconfigured Big 12, who would realistically add them?

That's the problem. ACC has Miami and FSU, SEC has UF, where else does UCF fit?

Pays to already have a seat at the table, cause once this thing is done the G5 will be permanently locked out.

I would hope none. If the end goal is four 16-team conferences, then P5 needs to drop a team rather than add anymore. I would think TCU would be the odd man out as a recent G5 team that is in the imploding conference.

BYU is considered a P5 team for scheduling purposes.

Memphis and Cincinnati seem like the best G5 programs available.

Boise St, ECU, UCF, and USF are the next tier.

Fresno St, San Diego St, Colorado St, Houston, Tulane, and the service academies probably form the next tier.

Outside of a state the size of Texas, I don't see any conferences doubling up on state schools.

That's why talk of Iowa State joining the Big 10 is silly.

UCF is essentially blocked from ever joining the SEC or ACC. Unless the Big 10 wanted to make inroads in Florida, which seems highly unlikely, they would have to hope for a "new" Big 12 invite.

The Big 12 falling apart is going to result in less G5 teams getting invites, not more. The other 3 conferences are not going to add G5 teams at their own expense just because the SEC has 16 teams.

If there were viable G5 schools out there that added more value than they took, those conferences would have already added them. It's not like they were twiddling their thumbs waiting for the SEC to go to 16 before they were allowed to.

The Big 12 added TCU in a fight for survival after losing 4 members. If the Big 12 collapses with the SEC maxed at 16 teams, the Pac, B10, and ACC will be more secure than ever and can be even more picky about who they add without fear of the SEC poaching more members from them.

There is no rule saying all 4 remaining conferences need 16 teams just because one has it.

I think UNLV has a shot. That new Vegas stadium is nice. Good road games for the Pac-12.

They wanted to de-emphasize athletics, and boy, did they succeed.

Nobody wants any of those schools (Cincy, USF, UCF, etc). The best of the bunch is probably UH and they aren’t getting a spot in one of the four big conferences either.
