Well, Tater Tot is brushing up on his coaching acumen as a GA for Dabo right now so you could be right.

We were probably one emotional rant away from paying considerably more than that in December.

It's absolutely an obstacle, but if he has a similar performance as last year, it'll be very seriously on the table yet again. If it's worse, he's very likely gone.

Brent Venables would be worth a look.

This is a critical year for Clark at UAB. He needs to prove he is not a “Jelly of the Month” Club Member. If Gus leaves look for AU to look at Neal Brown. He also needs to prove himself the next two years.

If a school is going to pay $24M (not counting any buyouts to assistant coaches) to rid themselves of a coach, it isn't for a marginal upgrade like Bill Clark.

If you spend that money, you have to follow it up with making a "strong arse offer", as Will Wade would say, to an established, championship winning coach.

What coaches fit that description?
Saban and Dabo ain't leaving for AU.
Jimbo ain't leaving aTm soon.
Is AU going to bring Urban out of retirement? Maybe try to poach the oldest coach in the NFL, Pete Carroll?
Hey, Les Miles is available (Edit: I forgot he got hired at KU; Auburn would be an upgrade though). Or AU could give Chizik another shot; he's not busy.

Bill Clark would be a massive upgrade. He'll dominate once he gets to a big school. And Auburn would be the perfect fit since he already has all the connections in state and is loved by the high school coaches here. Somebody like Matt Campbell has never really recruited in this area, and let's not pretend like Iowa State is some massive upgrade over UAB
