Damn that makes me feel old.

Indeed.

My daughter is about to turn 3 so I forget that a lot of people started families much earlier than I did instead of drinking their 20s away.

Thanks for starting this thread to educate the youngins.

It really was a nearly decade long battle between Spurrier and the entire rest of the SEC. He did a lot of raping and pillaging before his ego got the best of him and he bolted for the Redskins.

Gator fans on the newsgroups back then were insufferable -- especially because that level of sustained success was all new to Florida. I know it probably feels like LSU fans have been that way from the 2000s on and that's true to some extent but Florida fans were worse and their team and their coach often backed it up on the field. LSU fans spend way more time ripping our coach and bemoaning all our too close for comfort wins and coulda, shoulda, woulda moments. Florida fans in the 90s were all about swag. Imagine the Flagshippers with that kind of success.

ETA: We could probably have some fun dredging up some of the classic SEC football newsgroup posts from the 90s. Just to give a sampling of how different things were with Florida RUTSing everyone and everything. Hmm...

Yeah... a Nebraska team that would wipe the floor with any Bama team ever. Probably the best team in the history of CFB.

Saban is a dick, but he's not prone to running up the score.

Spurrier took that shite to a new level.

I'll always enjoy watching Spurrier lose.

So are you gonna retract your statement about Alabama being unable to run up the score or do you want to continue having everyone know you have no clue what you're talking about?

So Bama stomped the worst team in the SEC

Spurrier in the 90's

There was no message board to rant and vent - You heard it in every bar in every town.

Agree completely. When the Tigers ran the fake FG against SC a few years back, and the replay showed Les giggling and Spurrier humbled, it was one of the most satisfying feelings I've ever had watching football.

No doubt it was Spuurier: a Smartaleck and a Jackass as opposed to Saban, though intense, just Jackass.

Not at all but bama's offense is just not designed to throw all over opponents and score quick like the run 'n gun, and even if they were, Saban would not run it up like OBC.

Its got to be Spurrier. Both are winning consistently, but its the way they've won. Spurrier would run the score up just because he wanted to or held a grudge. With that said, Saban is winning championships. If the Tide threepeat next year, ask this again

I think it is a dead heat because Alabama is hated more as a program.

Nah..if you ask around, people hate Alabama because of their obnoxious redneck fanbase, not as much because of their program..well, unless you're an auburn fan maybe.

Florida didn't have decades of winning prior to Spurrier's success. Though Spurrier would run the score up more often than not, and his snarky comments never sat well with opposing fans.

The reason people hated Spurrier then much more than they hate Saban now was because he was a pompous arse who would run up 70 on you then laugh about it and make fun of you..At least Saban tries to show some class

Spurrier was much more hated.

He ran up the score consistently, said grating, obnoxious things on a regular basis, and although they dominated the SEC for a decade they managed 1 national championship and 0 perfect seasons, but he acted like he was super elite when in fact Florida wasn't even the best program in their own state during the 90's.

Saban is hated primarily just because he wins a lot and comes across very stern.

Spurrier was hated because he won alot but also for all the other stuff as well.

Heck he's still irritating as hell, but since he's at South Carolina and not winning championships nobody notices as much.
