Let’s say a team holds their opponents to zero yards rushing and has four sacks in a game....but gives up 525 yds passing and 36 points, losing the game 36-7 or something.
Given the above game result, what fan base would loudly proclaim the attributes of their “front 7?” I know one fan bass that might, but is it even possible to separate the performance of the “front 7” from the performance of the whole defense? And is it reasonable to completely separate the performance of the D from that of the O in today’s game? Just asking for a friend....

Even Ole Miss had a 100 yard rusher against MSU last year

Rushing: 244

Yards per Rush: 6.3
Rushing Touchdowns: 4
Slow down a second. Gus was very unhappy with his rush game after the game. You had a 67 yard rush in garbage time against scrubs. You also had 2 other runs of 59 and 30 yards, but Gus was unhappy about 36 rushes for 88 yards for the balance of the game. So, for 36 of 39 rushes, Auburn average 2.44 yards per rush.

MSU's defense was either average or bad against every good offense they played last year.

Wait, you can't just take numbers out because they don't fit your narrative. That's not how this works.

Got slapped around in the Sugar Bowl. Just manhandled.

Slow down even more.
If you take away all the rushes with positive yard, teams were held to negative or no yards. Now THAT is how you rush defense!

Anybody who watched that game wouldn't have said that our defense got slapped around. Our D gave up 261 yards of offense.
Our offense sucked that night, and yall's D was on savage alert. Congrats.
All of our DL is coming back, and they are hungry for another shot at yall. There is also going to be more quality depth at DL than any modern Clemson front I have seen. Looking forward to another heavyweight battle.

I didn't. Gus did. Get mad at him.

Auburn's whole front 7 may not be the best when you include LB's. It'll be hard to find a better from 4 in the SEC than Marlon Davidson, Dontavius Russell, Derrick Brown, and Nick Coe. Add in T.D Moultry and Big Kat Bryant at Buck and that's a nasty group.

What's so funny?
No one says Rivers is better than the preseason 1st team all SEC player Sweat, and nearly as good as probable first round pick Simmons.
He should be good, but that's definitely hyperbolic.

I think Bama, MSU, UGA, LSU and AU will have very good ones.
Have to think Bama would be #1 just because before the season starts. Not sure how you argue otherwise.
The rest, on paper, can all have a case.
SO many things can factor into this.

Front 7's don't play in a vacuum either. Your back end can make the front 7 look better or worse depending on their skill level. MSU has some pieces, but you do have to wonder if they really have the depth to get it done against the SEC elites.
IMO it's still bama, uga and Auburn with LSU knocking on the door.

State will have a top 5 front 7 in the conference. Last year Uga,Bama both had over 400 yards of offense and Aub,OM had over 500. Giving up 33 yards in the first game helped a good bit statistically. Take away the best and the worst efforts and that is what most teams are. State had a good front 7, not the best.

The talking heads at SEC Media days said it was Auburn. Only time will tell.
He went on to say
LINK
quote:
“I think it’s (front seven) is the best (in the SEC),” McElroy said Thursday on SEC Network after Gus Malzahn’s appearance. “You look at talent, experience, guys who can disrupt up front in the trenches on the defensive line, this group is as deep and as competitive as anything.
He went on to say
quote:
And if we’re just looking at roster alone, I think you can make a very clear argument that the Auburn Tigers have as good a roster as any team in the entire league, including Alabama, including Georgia.”

I feel pretty confident that no Florida fans have clicked open this thread.
But this is a great picture of what their defense will look like in 2018. Grantham will run the same Oklahoma 5-2 / Bears 8 in the box schemes. It will dominate the LOS against the sisters of the poor. And it will get crushed by any team with an offensive pulse.
