When Oklahoma and Oklahoma state join the SEC we'll drop Mizzou and aTm to make room. We don't need 16 teams.

Tulane had more SEC championships than Florida, Auburn, Kentucky and MSU when they left.

MNC's

4 = Georgia Tech

2 = Clemson

Taters would have to win 2 more Natty's just to draw even with the Bumbles. Adding the Cocks already got the SEC in SC so adding the Taters does not add $$. Besides the Taters chickened out in 92 which is why we have the Cocks. Day is coming when Saban retires and Dabo moves to Alabama. Tater melt that day will be epic.

They do this a lot. They were supposed to leave the ACC with us in '71 and backed out like little bitches so we left by ourselves.

A&M will stumble into one at some point after Saban retires. It will be many years from now, and it will have to be when Auburn is down, and when LSU still hasn't recovered from the remains of the Orgeron Error.

Mizzou without question, been the closest already in year 5.

If Lock comes back next year we should challenge for another SECCG appearance. UGA vs Mizzou will be the game to watch.

Cheese their fans wished they were a SEC target back when 'ol Danny was forced to step down due to a second round NCAA investigations/impending sanctions of tater football within 10 years.

3 Southern Independents - Florida State, UMiami, South Carolina - along with the SWC's Arkansas, Texas AM & Texas - were the 6 targets for SEC expansion late 80s/early 90s. Pickens was never considered by the SEC.

the taters certainly pussy-cat'd out in 1971. the were a no-show before the SC State Legislature with regards to withdrawing from the "North Carolina Conference" after verbally agreeing with USC to do so. Carolina followed through with its words.

Indeed Clemson contemplated withdrawing from the ACC along with USC, mainly due to the league's rule that athletes had to have a minimum 800 SAT score to qualify. It put both USC and Clemson at a huge recruiting disadvantage in football, partly because our state's public schools were so crappy but more because we had to recruit (& play) against SEC schools that weren't encumbered by this arbitrary rule. And like USC, Clemson chafed under the rule of the Tobacco Road cabal.

If I had to characterize Clemson's history in the ACC, I'd liken it to a bad marriage in which the couple decide to stay together for the sake of the kids but aren't even pretending to love each other anymore. But it's our home & it's the only one we've got. For what it's worth, we are a founding member.

Why Clemson's administration got cold feet back in '70-'71 I can't say for sure. Probably because this was turning out to be a period of major transition for the athletic administration - Frank Howard was forced out as head football coach after the '69 season & was in the process of being nudged out of the AD position as well. But I suspect that it had more to do with money than anything else - back in those days the NCAA strictly controlled football TV broadcast rights, & schools were limited to 2 TV appearances per year. Obviously the money was a pittance compared to what we have today. Meanwhile, nearly all ACC basketball games were televised, & Clemson didn't want to get off that gravy train.

With TV money so much less of a factor back then, Carolina always had enough money & a big-enough, loyal-enough fan base that it could survive financially as an Independent in football. It could even schedule home-&-away series with big-time opponents like Miami, Notre Dame, Michigan, Southern California & Nebraska. But withdrawing from the ACC absolutely killed Carolina basketball. Back then, USC had a championship-caliber program, while Clemson's was next to nothing. But once outside the ACC, USC was no longer an attractive place for basketball recruits, & Frank McGuire's program went into a slow but steady decline before he was retired in 1980. For Clemson's part, the ACC soon rescinded its 800 rule, & expansion eventually diluted the influence of the N.C. schools within the conference. And on balance, Clemson's football program has been pretty successful since then, while its basketball program leads the series with USC since it withdrew.

It'll be South Carolina for the obvious reason.

Even with a UGA resurgence, SC still has the easier path.

SC has everything in place. Boom and staff are dynamic recruiters and good judges of talent. They also appear able to coach-up what they've got.

SC will be in the hunt for Atlanta next year - get UGA in Columbia - Tennessee in Columbia - Mizzou in Columbia.

Next year we'll be a lot more experienced. I dunno, I just like our chances to start making a move next year.

Bobby Cremins played for them in the ACC.
