This is a follow up to the thread on Tennessee. If the talent is not great in Tennessee I'm curious where were they getting talent in the 90s when they were a big power. was fulmer getting talent in Florida or Georgia? but Florida and Florida st were also good at that time

Georgia. UGA was garbage in the 90s before Richt got there.
Tennessee also got kids out of SC as well.
Tennessee is much like Nebraska. Good enough to be national brand and recruit nationally but once bugger brands get better they fell off. Both schools aren't in talent rich states to replenish yearly losses.

Seemed like Tennessee had kids from all over honestly. They were a powerhouse there for a little while.

Tennessee was recruiting nationally, with an emphasis on California/Illinois, and had no competition in terms of pillaging South Carolina.
It's a lot harder to recruit nationally when your brand has fallen off/pretty much every school has money and airtime, and recruiting South Carolina is a nightmare with a stout Clemson. Rest assured, Tennessee will have an opportunity to become a consistent Top 20/25 team once Clemson falters.

Tennessee has always recruited nationally. While the rest of the conference has relied upon state and regional talent we have gone everywhere. It’s why our recruiting budget is typically the highest in the nation.

Pretty sure they did a great job throughout the South. Tee Martin was from Mobile, Jamal Lewis-ATL, Overstreet-Jackson, MS, Peyton-New Orleans, for example. Man has that really changed.

Clemson has taken a handful of recruits but overall talent hasn’t been our issue during this down period. It has been coaching and leadership.

Ohio, California, the Carolinas, Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama. But a good bit of those guys in the late 90's, early 00's were Tennessee guys. It was a lot easier for Tennessee as there were some absolute dogshit coaching staffs and programs in the SEC in that period.

Tennessee is centrally located to most of the eastern seaboard. When they were good in the mid to late 90's the following schools were bad:
-Alabama
-Georgia
-South Carolina
-Clemson
-Notre Dame
You also had Ohio State being good but not great, Penn State beginning their long slow decline under Paterno's final decade, and Virginia Tech not having yet become a power. UNC had a few good years but North Carolina is a big state that can support more than one school. NC State was awful, as is their wont. Basically a football vacuum existed in most of the states surrounding east Tennessee, and the Vawls took full advantage of it.
Now compare to today. The following schools are powers:
-Alabama
-Georgia
-Clemson
-Notre Dame
-Ohio State
South Carolina is much better than they were 20+ years ago. Virginia Tech has fallen off from their best years but they are still better than they were pre-Beamer. UNC is on the rebound. Even NC State wins the occasional football game. Where is left that Tennessee can dominate out-of-state recruiting? Kentucky? Even they're better than they were 25 years ago. Tough row to hoe for the Dreamsicles.

Georgia (Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant)
Alabama (Joey Kent, Tee Martin, Fred Weary, Jason Allen, Jayson Swain)
Louisiana (Peyton Manning, Raynoch Thompson)
Oklahoma (Marcus Nash, Robert Meacham, Jonathan Brown)
North Carolina (Heath Shuler, Leonard Little, Shawn Bryson)
South Carolina (Shaun Ellis, Darwin Walker, Albert Haynesworth)
Tennessee used to be the #1 recruiter in the Carolinas. They signed a whole lot of top players from both North and South Carolina in the 90s and early 2000s. And they used to sign a bunch of kids from Alabama (especially North Alabama).

I would agree here. Tennessee hasn't been as talented as Alabama, LSU, and Georgia... yet they've had comparable talent to Florida and Auburn over the last 10 years.
However, Florida and Auburn have had much more success in that time frame.

Virginia, NC, SC, GA, and Alabama. They had a decent stream of NFL talent for a decade or so that came from high schools in neighboring states. Once schools in those states started getting their shite together and slowly cut out the leaks, that’s when Tennessee went to shite. Honestly, if you had swapped Memphis and Tennessee back when Fulmer left, Memphis would have done much better in that timeframe than Tennessee did.

They got 3/5 of the top 5 players in GA in one recruiting class (Cosey Coleman,Deon Grant,Jamal Lewis) All were big contributors and ended up in the NFL.They also do very well in North Carolina.

Back when Tennessee was good, they were getting guys from Chicago, LA, SC, Georgia and some good players from Tennessee.
Tennessee has been flooding with new residents and will only get better. I say they are in a good position of kids board in 2002 can remember their good days.

I wouldn't say garbage but 93-96 weren't great for us

Who has Clemson gotten recently that UT may have gotten in the past?
Trevor Lawrence (born in Tennessee...both parents were UT fans, grew up wanting to be the next Peyton Manning).
Tee Higgins - Grew up in Oak Ridge (20 miles from Knoxville).
Amari Rogers - Tee Martin's son...played at Knoxville Catholic
And they aren't just players from Tennessee or with direct Tennessee ties...Travis Etienne said many times that he grew up a UT fan and wanted to play at Tennessee as a kid.
Those are just recent graduates...how about currently on the roster?
What about Jake Briningstool...the #1 TE in the country and #1 player in Tennessee in the '21 class
Bryn Tucker...Defensive end who played at Knoxville Catholic (same school as Amari Rogers).
I could go on...but the point has been made. The type of players Fulmer and Cutcliff were able to bring in back in the 90s aren't giving UT a second look these days.
And that's just Clemson...Every program in the region that is up right now makes it harder for UT to regain a foothold in recruiting.

It has been coaching and leadership.
I say that talent has been greatly effected by the horrible coaching and leadership. Derek Dooley was the beginning of the end of UT's pipeline into these types of players. Who knows how long it will take for UT to rebuild anything with any sort of semblance to that machine.

They were a national brand and Fulmer was cheating his arse off. They got kids from all around the country.
Much like Nebraska - without the draw of being the only show in town they come crashing back down to earth.
Now their lightyears behind they’re competition.
They just hired a coach that went 6-4 at UCF. UCF literally got a better coach.
Alabama is currently on the longest win streak ever vs Tennessee. 14-0, Tennessee hasn’t won that game since 2007
Florida is 15-1 against them in the past 16 years and currently on a 4 game winning streak.
Georgia is on a 4 game winning streak and is 9-2 in the last 11.
Auburn is 7-1 vs them in the last 8.
Vanderbilt has won 3 of the last 5 and 5 of the last 9. That’s insane.
They’ve failed to get kids on campus like Trevor Lawrence who was glowing about Tennessee early in his recruitment and he looked like a slam dunk or Tee Higgins and now they’re letting 5* TY Simpson out of state to go to Bama. They’re not in the running for Arch Manning.
Tennessee is a shell of its former self and now they’re relying on a G5 coach who barely finished above .500

If I remember right, they were the first to focus on building great facilities, which brought in great national recruits, and they're the ones who started the facility arms race.

The talent in Tennessee is great, one of the best per capita in the country - we've sucked so bad that we get poached by Clemson, UGA and fricken bama.
