Yes. I went to LSU, so they are "my" team, IMO. Even if I had not gone to LSU, I would still use the possessive form when referring to them.
For NFL teams, fans still say this, and the only tie to the team a fan would have is that he or she lives in the area of the team. When that person moves, they are still a fan of that team, despite not residing in the area where the team plays.
The same goes for college teams. No one can stop someone from liking a certain school, even if he or she didn't attend/graduate from that school.

FWIW I don't really care what people say. I was more or less playing devil's advocate with my buddy. Doesn't bother me either way just wanted to hear what all you bastards had to say on the subject.

I agree with the majority here. I have gone to LSU games since I was a boy. Wanted to go to LSU but then 9/11 happened. I decided to join the army as soon as I was out of High School in 04. I am doing college while in the service but LSU is who I feel I am. Sister went there and lil brother. Also in this theory even Les Miles or Nick Saban couldn't say "we" bc they didnt grad. from there!
As an LSU fan, I will gladly accept your allegiance to the Tigers. Thank you for your service.

The only thing that really chaps my arse is the redneck confrontational fan who literally has nothing to do with the school, who has way too much emotionally invested in its success and failure, who is quick to criticize, over-reactive, and who has no knowledge or understanding of the school as a whole. When those people say we and us, I get a little haughty. Like when they say stuff like "we aren't trying very hard" as they sit on the sofa and drink beer and eat Cheetos.
People have all sorts of reasons they don't or can't attend the schools they root for. It's not really my place to define the line in the sand.

Have you ever served in the military? Do you say "Our military" or "Our soldiers" when compairing them to the military men and women of other countries? As a vet, I promise not to hold it against you if you do. I have never attended LSU. I joined the military after highschool. The fighting Tigers of LSU have been MY team for 40 years and will always be MY team.

Every school has these types of fans... the "sidewalkers." There's really nothing you can do to keep these people from pulling for a certain team, even though they may tarnish the good name of the university which they pull for. Just laugh and remind yourself that those people exist everywhere, not just for your team.

Thank you for your service. I believe that you have earned the right to call them YOUR team.

If you attended the university in question during the years of praise then it is acceptable. If you never went to the school it is never acceptable and rather stupid to try and be apart of something you had absolutely no stake in.

I'm not saying I have an issue with other people saying whatever they want to say. They are definitely my team. I just don't feel right saying we or us since i'm not out there practicing with them or playing my heart out on saturdays. I'll always love my Tigers, but until I magically become a staff member, i'm only a fan. But i'll be the best damn fan I can be!

If you give your loyalty to a team, sit through the highs and lows, the taunting from other teams, spend money on merchandise, go to games, watch games on tv, and pump money directly or indirectly to the program, there's no reason they can't say "we" or "us". If you think that someone had to go to the university to have a stake in the football team, that's rather snobby (not like that's unheard of on this site...how many conversations break out about the type of shorts people wear or how 8s and 9s magically become 5s and 4s that people that spend 50 hours a week on here wouldn't touch}?
One other thing...just because someone went to the university doesn't mean they are a good representative of your university. Having a college degree doesn't negate trashiness or idiocy.

Can I get an AMEN?

Call it snobby or not but I feel sorry for the fans of other schools who never went there but then trash Mississippi State or Ole Miss. They have little to no education at a higher level but deem it necessary to trash other universities. I always love to call a person on this too. The inevitable Bama or LSU fan I run into through work trashes State and I say "so what year did you attend Alabama". The deer in the headlights look is priceless.
And that isn't a scenerio a lot of people on here probably run I to since everybody is either a Bama fan or an LSU fan. I suppose they just naturally think the other person never attended college there either just like they never did.
But with the smaller schools that is what makes us so rabid about our loyalty. Most of us attended school there or we would be like everyone else and pic the no brainer to be a fan of. Then we come here and start threads like this because we want acceptance

I get where you're coming from but as fans we feel like we are connected to and part of the team. LSU represents Louisiana so it's a pride thing

Sometimes but usually 'the club', 'the team' or some such thing. I grew up here, joined military at 17, got out in 10 years and went to USA (Mobile) for family reasons. The 'sidewalk' fans are the ones who occasionally go to a game but mainly watch on TV. Watching the tube is the reason for these huge contracts, millionaire coaches, and state-of-the-art facilities so Gawd bless them/us one and all I say. The only 'type' fan I've ever had a problem with are the ones who disappear when times are tough...no sense of 'through thick and thin'. See this all the time.
