When was the last time there were at least 3 CFB teams that could win a championship?

I honestly can’t think of a season which featured 3 or more legitimate championship contenders.

This kind of makes playoff expansion pointless.

Doesn’t happen often in football.
That’s why Bama hasn’t lost to an unranked team in like 13 years.

expansion gives better chance of getting the right teams in. 2012 bama/lsu/A&M/Georgia/Florida/USC all wouldve beaten notre dame for instance.

Honestly, look at the past decade. The 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2020 NC games were all pathetically one-sided. One truly dominant team vs. a pretender at the very end, so three or four is out of the question. It's been well discussed in the other playoff expansion thread, but D1 college football has a disparity problem that's becoming a runaway train.

2009.

Alabama, Florida and Texas all had a legit chance to win the title.

Cincinnati was up there as well. Had two of those teams above dropped, Bearcats would have played for the title.

Ummmmmmm.........

The 2011 NC lost to the runner-up at home earlier that year.

And Honestly, 2011 had LSU, Bama, and Arky all ranked in the top five the weekend before the conference championships.

People forget that LSU vs Arkansas that year was a 1 vs 3 matchup.

They got absolutely destroyed by Florida in the sugar bowl that year. Alabama Texas and Florida were in their own league that year in 2009.

2020, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014. Most years there are 3 capable of winning a national title, just rare there are 4. Even more rare anyone outside the top 4 has a realistic shot, which is why expansion is dumb IMO

Lost due to a bad call on the goal line. If it had been called correctly, then Alabama plays Oklahoma State in the BCS instead of destroying (and embarrassing) LSU.

Actually, Alabama lost because they couldn't properly kick a field goal.

No need to cry about refs.

I feel like 2014 had three relatively solid teams at the end of the year that had a shot at winning it all: Alabama, Ohio State, and Oregon. Alabama lost to Ohio State by a touchdown while the CFP National Championship Game was close until the fourth quarter. People forget the score was 28-20 late in that game before two fourth quarter TDs put the game away for the Buckeyes.

Bama & LSU were the best teams.
Clemson couldn’t have beaten either.

Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma were all capable in 2017. That was easily Lincoln Riley's best team and was the one team he had that was good enough to be more than a semifinal doormat.
