When Spurrier left, and what about other transitions from one coach to another?

So I tracked down my old friend Larry Phipps today. We caught up and talked for a couple of hours, He just recently turned 70 and is in the process of moving back to the coast where we both started in the business so many years ago.

Hadn’t spoke with him in ages. Fellow old timers will remember his magazine he put out for decades, Phipps Phearless Phorcast which was the preseason bible to a lot of fans and media. It was by far the best SEC magazine out there in the 70s, 80s and 90s and up until 2008 when online media, and age, finally forced him into retirement.

We were both friends with a lot of the coaches back then, particularly at SC of course, and today we were talking about the various transitions between coaches at various programs.

We talked about when Saban took over at LSU and at Bama. What he inherited.

We talked about what Les inherited from Saban and what Ed O inherited from Les.

We talked about when Richt took over at UGA and then Kirby took over after Richt. (Really interesting conversation there because we both actually went back to the Goff and Donnan years at UGA too.)

And then we talked about what Holtz inherited from Brad Scott, what SPURrier inherited from Holtz, what mUSChamp inherited from SPURrier ..... and that led to the circumstances which led to a conversation about what Zook inherited from SPURrier.

I had forgotten, SPURrier didn’t exactly leave Zook in good shape when he left Florida either. Especially in the trenches. mUSChamp has really done yeoman’s work rebuilding SC. Was Zook given the same chance by Florida?

What were all the various other transitions like in the eyes of the fans? Because SPURrier just shite on us when he left although, he built so much while here we still owe him. He raised so much money.

So let me ask you Korin ... let’s see just how stupid you are, or either how young.

When Spurrier left, how did he leave it for Zook in the trenches? I mean did Zook have to, let’s say, swap any players around to certain positions just to have enough to scrimmage? If so, which ones. Remember?

I’ll wait.

He left Zook with a first round QB, but it came at a price indeed. Rex Grossman was a party animal liked his women. He didn't like being coached and left after 1 yr under Zook to be replaced by Gatorade National Player of the Year, who was not option QB,Urban found out later, he was pure drop passer with the best spiral Ive ever seen.

In 2002 UF had a big void at WR, it was bubble screen left and right. We did have a great LB/DE in Chandling Crowder and I' never forget the bear hug he put on UKs Fat Boy QB,spun him around and he threw a pick. Remember Zook beat Saban and LSU which won the BCS that year, he beat Jawja and UT also. He was a great recruiter, but the locker room got toxic. Urban won the BCS in 2006 with Zooks senior defense, make no mistake about it.

I will also never forget Zooks introduction as the new UF head coach, you had to understand speed listening to really know what he said. But he did say he just needed to take shower, get a cellphone and he would hit the ground running to recruit. He was special teams coach under Spurrier and if there was a long return during a game, he could out race everyone to the endzone.

Some Gators dismissed him as a DC, but he was a DC for the New Orleans Saints when hired by UF. He loved to water ski and was in top health back then. I always liked him.

Fisher and Elko took the same players who had no clue how to tackle and put together a pretty solid defense, even though it had serious issues in the secondary.

When he "left". You mean "quit on his team mid season like a loser". I know you agree, I just hated it for y'all that he did that.

Yeah .... that’s what I meant. I was just being nice about it because he did a lot of good things for us while he was here.

But he is no loser, He quit on us just like he did UF but worse .... yet he is no loser.

He’s got a big ego.

Rooster I knew as soon as I heard he was coming to Carolina he'd tear down whatever he built so the next guy behind him couldn't win more than him anytime soon. his ego being the reason.

it was a fun ride - we saw some vintage HBC calling plays Dylan's SR year. I can't ever hate him but I'm still pissed at him. he knows he blew at least 2 more trips to Atlanta after 2010.

I knew he was done right here after USC beat Vanderbilt 48-34 on Sept 20,2014. he'd had enough.

Mullen left Moorhead in good shape. It's just Mississippi State was dumb to promote a baseball coach as an athletic director

That’s an interesting point that I never thought of. Build it tear then tear it down so the next guy couldn’t be as successful as him. You could very well be right. Never thought of that

It's not that Cohen was a baseball coach. It's just that Cohen is a Prick, who is disliked by many people including MSU Coaches.

I’ve been pondering this with Ray Tanner’s administration as a whole. Can’t be dethroned as top dog if the athletic department produces no more men’s national championships... Eddiemurphypoints.bmp
