Can we Bama fans count on the rant to let us take time to mourn and come to terms with the fact that the greatest ever has retired? We will only need a couple years of mourning before we can handle trolling.

You gave none

If mercy could be a negative integer, you’re getting that

You didn't hear? Ole Miss beat Louisville.

Ole Miss is retiring Nick Saban.

In 20 years, when he retires after 11 more Natties, I’ll be 77.

I doubt I’ll be trolling the interwebs.

Reminder that when Bryant retired, no SEC team (outside of Alabama) won a championship until Florida in 1996. Saban's retirement would mean a 14 year dark age for the conference

For Saban yes. For Bama's sake?

The question is will Alabama fans be merciful when the next guy is good but not Saban great.

Usually when a legend retires, schools go through several coaches before they realize that the next guy isn't going to be a legend like the previous guy.

Will Alabama avoid the tailspin by giving the next guy time to build his own legacy?

We know this can’t be replicated. We will win one probably 2 years after Saban based of talent aligning, but I could see a Bama recruit fatigue after Saban.

99% of Bama fans understand no one is going to duplicate the greatest dynasty in the history of the sport.

But we would expect the next guy to consistently be in the top 10 in recruiting and at least in the hunt for a championship more often than not.

Saban has built a beast. Bama won't become average unless they completely screw up the next hire after the 2030 season.

IDK why people assume that Bama will slip back once Saban retires. Ohio State didnt. Oklahoma didnt. Why is it just assumed?

In Oklahoma's case, there were enough questions about where the program was headed (specifically recruiting and defense) that it made it a lot easier for Riley to follow Stoops.

Nobody is expecting 'Bama to fall off a cliff but the expectations on the next guy could be unreasonable. (It seems like the Alabama fans here have more reasonable expectations which bodes well for them.)

At some point Saban will start to deal with negative recruiting about his age and how long he will be at 'Bama. Guys like Paterno and Bowden had to deal with that. No matter how good you continue to be, recruits start wondering if you will be there throughout their tenure and that can snowball. Once you lose a few top tier recruits because of this and production drops the media starts wondering if the guy has lost his touch. It is really unfortunate and unfair but it does happen.

BTW, I am not comparing Saban to Bowden or Paterno. He is on a different level but I don't think he is immune to the age related snowball effect.
