Star point guard Sahvir Wheeler leaving Georgia - AJC
quote:
In a devastating blow to Georgia basketball and coach Tom Crean’s efforts to rebuild it, sophomore point guard Sahvir Wheeler has decided to leave the program.
Wheeler’s father, Teddy, confirmed the news Tuesday. It was first reported by ESPN.
“I don’t have anything to add,” Teddy Wheeler said. “I’d rather him tell his own story. I think that’s appropriate, because this is not about me.”
Teddy Wheeler confirmed that Sahvir is back at home in Houston and plotting his next move. He has entered his name into the NBA Draft. However, he is not hiring agent and is simultaneously entering the NCAA’s transfer portal. So either way, he will not be returning to Georgia, where he set several assists records as an All-SEC guard this past season.
quote:
Wheeler is the third starter and sixth player overall to leave Georgia since the beginning of the 2020-21 season. He joins sophomore Toumani Camara (Dayton), junior Tye Fagan (Ole Miss), sophomore Christian Brown and junior Mikal Starks in deciding to leave since the 2020-21 season concluded. Sophomore Jaykwon Walton left early in the season.

Is it possible that this is an understatement? That's terrible news.

How loathsome of an a-hole do you have to be to have virtually your entire squad walk out the door on you? This is nuts

Crean always has been an a-hole but this is really bad.
He owes D Wade for his career.

Too late to fire Crean and find anyone worth a shite to replace him now. Ouch. UGA is looking at potentially being the worst team in the conference next season.

I don't know. Ask Auburn Fans.

Georgia being so bad at basketball has to be the most baffling out of all SEC teams/program performance. I am not sure if there is a close second.

We had our chance and let it whiz by. Supposedly about a month ago the players approached the AD and asked for Crean to be replaced or they’d all walk but the administration didn’t want to/couldn’t pay the buyout. So this is the result.
Never been a good basketball program but we haven’t been rock bottom in a while, either. Time to get reacquainted with that old familiar feeling, I suppose.

I mean if he is so awful that half the team is willing to walk out the door if he isn't fired, surely there has to be something there he can fired for cause over. Internal investigations conducted to avoid paying buyouts have become a popular trend recently.

My guess is unlike some other schools, we don’t want to spend money in the current climate and open up an anal probe of our AD just to prevent our basketball program from going from bad to worse. The program will suffer for the next 5 years and then we will rebuild it back up to mediocre with an outside chance at hitting a home run.

The real paradox is how he was getting all these bluebloods to start with. His efforts represent a number of outstanding recruits every year, You'd think word would have got out in this day of social media with the guys.

Gregg Marshall managed to fly under the radar as a violent, racist sociopath for years. We desperately, and embarrassingly, tried to hire him. Wichita paid his buyout because their administration knew everything that was going on and did nothing to stop it for years, and he was going to be able to prove it if they refused to pay him. The point being, a lot of coaches - probably the vast majority - are dishonest pieces of shite out on the recruiting trail, and teenage boys aren't well versed in sizing up sleazy car salesmen.

Man, this sinks Georgia even further.
Crean is tanking them. Someone tell him there is not a number 1 pick in College like the NBA if you tank.
