It is easy to understand the animosity. Both are little bros to Alabama.
Auburn gets most of the attention and abuse from Alabama fans, LSU fans can't stand it and demand equal attention and abuse, and Alabama fans laugh at them. Therefore, LSU is jealous of Auburn. Aubs are afraid that LSU might someday move up the attention and abuse chain and are protecting their position by hating on LSU, and also emphasizing their superiority in the Alabama abuse hierarchy.
Take Alabama out of the equation, no problem.

The hostility is always just under the surface until game week. The rest of the year, we hold back a bit due to having a common enemy.
