What's real story behind UT going after Pruitt so hard?

It was just a few minutes ago Pruitt had the Vols on a nice winning streak and UT Nation was boasting about their program was on the up and up. Now a few months later and the the UT administration is clearly out to get him.
I get that UT doesn't want to pay a big buyout and are looking to get Pruitt out with cause, but how did it get to this situation? All big time programs cheat, but for your own school to go out on a seek and destroy mission doesn't make sense.
I just don't get how Pruitt fell out of favor so fast. I don't buy the recruiting violations are the reason because Fulmer was one of the biggest cheaters in college football.
So what happened internally that brought this situation to a boiling point?

Tennessee fans are tired of losing and boosters are putting pressure on the administration to do something about it. Personally, I have no idea why Fulmer went after Pruitt to begin with. The man had absolutely zero head coaching experience and hadn't shown any promise in that department - unlike Kirby Smart who seemed tailor made to be a successful head coach. The tin foil hatter inside me believes Fulmer hired Pruitt away from Tuscaloosa more to hurt Alabama than to help Tennessee.
Bottom line: Tennessee is a historic football power that has fallen into the depths of mediocrity. They want out and everyone realizes Pruitt is not the man to do it.

Fulmer saw Pruitt as just a "Yes Man". Someone that fulmer would be able to manipulate. It was a bonus for fulmer that he thought he would be stealing something away from Saban and Bama. Fulmer spends more time worrying about Bama than he does about just making Tennessee a better program. For Tennessee to ever get back to they Neyland/Majors type of program, like they use to be,they will have to cut ties with fulmer and clean house. Quit focusing on Bama, focus on bettering the Tennessee Football Program.

The absolute bottom line is to get the athletic department straight with a competent director.

Tennessee realizes Pruitt isn't going to get them to the next level and they want to move on. Best bet for Tennessee is to get an offensive minded coach to come on board.

Fulmer is trying to get Pruitt out with cause. He will conduct a short interview process with a few coaches, decide they are not right fits for Tennessee, he will name himself head coach.

After Kiffin, Dooley, Jones, Tennessee didn't have the luxury of going after another unproven coach. Spend the money, get your heads together, and go get someone who has a head coaching track record.
Sounds simple, but football is filled with some of the most stubborn people ever put on this earth. The BOT guaranteed failure with their constant input to be part of the hiring process. Even the fans have had enough input to run off a candidate. That stuff doesn't happen unless you keep putting your business out there for public inspection.
The vols football program is the proverbial car with two steering wheels. Who wants to get in the backseat of that thing?

Just walk down the hall and ask JP if he would take 1 million per year for 10 years as a settlement with him being able to go find a gig and not have his 1 million reduced by his future earnings. Plus he gets to keep all that orange gear.

Fulmer wants one last shot ala Barry Alvarez.

Agreed. I would actually like to see Tennessee improve. Not under fulmer, but I look forward to the Bama/Tennessee game actually meaning something again as far as Championship Runs are concerned for both teams. I just don't see that happening as long as fulmer is involved with UT.

I am in complete agreement.

I get that UT has decided to move in another direction, but something had to have happened for it to fall to crap so fast. Just four months ago, UT was riding an 8-game winning streak and everyone was talking about them nationally. I get they were not that good this season, but schools just don't abandon their HC suddenly, especially in a Covid year. Just trying to understand how Pruitt went from being Fulmer's hand picked coach to shoving him out the back door so fast!

Tennessee is just a program in disarray.
Their fans don’t even care anymore.

If you had told Tennessee administration all that then they would have avoided this.

They saw Doc Holliday was about to be available so they decided to strike while the iron is hot.

Tennessee did that when they brought in Schiano but that’s fans revolted and ended up with Pruitt. I thought at the time Schiano would have been a solid hire at the very least.
