a steady guy like charley mcclendon who never lost to teams he was supposed to beat but didn't beat any teams he was underdog to or a gus malzahn who may have some lows but is able to give you a team able to compete for championships every 4 or 5 years?

you wanna win 9-10 every year and never compete or average 9-10, have lows down to 7 or 8 but also have 11-1 seasons?

If those are the only 2 choices you choose a guy like Gus.

The problem is the guy who wins 8-10 regularly is hiring a guy who messes the program up and you turn into a basement dweller until you find another good coach.

It's hard to fire a guy who wins 8-10 regularly because it could always be worse.

Jackie Sherrill or Steve Spurrier.

Wins most of the games he’s supposed to, but makes damn sure to beat your biggest rival and rub their nose in it.

Definitely the latter.

Mack was on the hot seat at Texas after winning 10 games in each of 2001-2003 because he hadn't won a bcs bowl game and couldn't beat OU in that time, who was admittedly the better team, but always whooped Texas.

Mack 2004-09 obviously fixed those problems, but then you had your 7-8 win seasons you're talking about as well.

I think a realistic goal is to have the latter where you occasionally have a 7-8 win season as a rebuild, with the following 3 seasons at least contending for a conference championship and big bowl game / playoff appearance

Do y’all regret firing Mack Brown? What the consensus on this for Texas?

It was similar to the Les Miles ushering out in a sense that it was pretty obvious he met his ceiling and Texas wasn't going to be what they once were.

Him leaving was calculated, it was the replacement that was hired that was the abject disaster.

Texas put their eggs in the Saban basket. How close he (Saban) was to actually considering leaving for Texas - I honestly don't know. I believe where there's smoke, there's fire, but how close he was to actually taking the job is unknown I guess.

All that matters is that he didn't, then Texas ran out of options and gave it to Strong over James Franklin and Jim Mora.

Strong's second game was a 41-6 loss to BYU at home, so we knew fairly quickly we were never going to be good with him (although some apologists would never admit it). So, with Mack instead of Charlie those three seasons, we might go 24-13 instead of 16-21, which is at least better but still nothing great.

Hell no!

That would be constant frustration, no thanks.
