The Elite 8 and the Sweet 16 was the same year,

I don't know what these numbers are.

Why are you counting Grant's VCU stats? He has only gone to the NCAA Tourney once at Alabama.

I assumed we were talking about at Alabama. But yea, he did go to the Sweet 16 as a 10-seed last year. Another true indication of how good his team was throughout the season.

Oh ok...I thought you were just talking about Gottfried being better than Grant while at Alabama.

I'm not arguing he is the greatest coach in cbb, just that I think he is a little better than Grant.

quote:Well, to your point, I agree that it is harder to get to the dance at a middle of the road big conference program than a dominant mid major program that is going to play in their conference championship game almost every year. So, with that caveat, Mark Gottfried's multiple NCAA appearances at Bama and NC State are also more impressive than Grant's performance so far at Bama.

In Grant's defense, it is still early in his career and he may turn the corner in the next year.
It certainly is a debateable topic as Grant isn't a bad coach. I just happen to be of the opinion that Gottfried is slightly better.

Didn't we lose to Coppin St? I was really young when this happened but I still remember being embarrassed

I'm aware. He was talking about years we were a #1 seed. We were the #2 in Duke's bracket in '98, not a #1.

UT-Arlington--#16 the year Kansas beat Memphis (our first-round opponent). It's our only tourney appearance.
