What is the expected tenure of a good head coach in the SEC?

how long does it take to:
-burn out ?
-use all their tricks and begin a slow and steady decline (ala Fulmer, Nutt,etc.)?
-for other coaches to learn from them and take the next "innovative" step?
-when today's SEC football has passed them by?
5 years/ 8? 10?

does it all depend on their coordinators or are some, by nature, imaginative and creative enough to adapt to annual "changing times" in the SEC?

This is not a "troll post." It may belong on the SEC rant but is a good question and probably more worth discussion than most if the posts seen on a daily basis. You must have woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning going after this hit for a legitimate post.

Thanks. I thought it would be thought provoking. I am 46 and have watched SEC football my whole life. Some coaches were bad hires and have no business being in the SEC, like Coach O and Joker Phillips. Other coaches are good hires and are able to adapt their philosophy and style every year to stay competitive. Some are Saban (of coarse), Tubberville was good, Johnny Majors, Vince Dooley, Spurrier, etc. some coaches are good hires and don't have the ability to adapt and change, like Fulmer, Nutt, and Ron Zook. Which one is Miles?

All good points... I guess it depends on the goals of the school and administration as to how good they want to be. If expectations are being met year in year out....the coach stays for a long tenure. If not, they make a change. Part of that criteria is ticket sales and revenue...

Good coaches in the SEC, and any other conference for that matter) used to last 15-20 years or even more. Because of the nature of the game today (read money) coaches do not last that long anymore.
Coaches like McClendon, Dooley, Hayes, Schembechler, Bowden are all a thing of the past now. It is no longer good enough to win a conference championship every few years with (maybe) a NC thrown in every now and then. In those days, Tubs would still be at Auburn, Fulmer at UT, Cutcliffe at Ole Miss etc...
Spurrier is the anomaly. He adapted. The UF Steve Spurrier is no way related to the USC version. Because of his name and the USC lack of tradition, he had been given more time to produce than many other coaches are today.

Really? I am NOT a fan of Miles at all. That is no secret, but I am NOT trolling here. Just having a discussion about the way this league has changed and what that has done to coaching tenures...

I am not a Miles fan because he gets paid $4.5 mill a year and performs average. Miles is THE offensive coach and our offense has been sub par for many years. LSU pays another million bucks to Chavis who, in my opinion, earns it, year in year out. The LSU "program" is VERY successful despite Miles' failures.
For 4.5 million per year, I expect a coaching mistake once a year or once every other year. Miles screws up all the time and his offenses play with no discipline and poor execution consistently.
You don't have to agree with me, but this board is for people to discuss matters and hear others opinions.

This. All that cash for for an inept offense who looks like they have no clue out there. the result: 3-4 losses

Hope not, but we have seen this trend before with Miles coached offenses and they never got out of it.... Without the injuries, we stood a better chance of executing the plays he calls, but its not likely he will make any radical changes to his game planning to adjust to this. I think he is likely to continue to run up the middle on 3rd and 6 for 3 yards. No reverses with Sheppard, no play action passes to the TE and no mid game adjustments that counteract what the defense is doing...
