What is stopping LSU from a similar fate?
Tennessee, Michigan, Nebraska, Texas etc. All power programs that fell from grace and can't pull themselves out of the hole. 2019 was the sacrificial lamb for dark days ahead.

To be honest, nothing "stops" any program from having a similar fate. All 4 had different catalysts, ranging from a lack of in-state talent, to poor coaching hires, to the upswing of their most prominent rival, etc. Alabama looked practically down in the ditch post-Stallings.

Just like the right hire can elevate a team to amazing heights, the wrong one (or a mediocre one that gets a huge pile of cash after one great season/win and then becomes harder to remove) can drag them down.

LSU isn't there yet. They're only 2 seasons removed from a national title, and Louisiana is a talent-rich state next door to Texas. It'd take a monumentally terrible post-Orgeron hire to truly capsize the ship.

Nothing. Y'all are fricked, doomed by your own ineptitude and corruption.

I can't say it's a sad thing to see either, sorry

re: What is stopping LSU from a similar fate?
The only way to screw up the LSU job is to hire a total buffoons of a head coach - and even then, that guy can win some games.

Outside of major recruiting violations or something, LSU will hire a decent coach and at worst win 8-9 games most years and have some years where they are really, really good. And they could hire a great coach and immediately be awesome again.

TLDR - It's really hard to make LSU terrible at football post-2000. You almost have to try, or at the very least hire an idiot. That doesn't mean LSU is guaranteed to be a Top 10 program, because that's very different. But it's hard in 2021 to consistently win 5-6 games at LSU unless you just have no clue what you are doing.

Because I'm confident Woodward will make a solid hire

Look at Bama between Stallings and Saban, they were toiling around with Fran and Shula.

Plus the talent base that LSU recruits from will always be fertile meaning a downturn will be short lived.

Not really comparable anymore. We hired DuBose because he was a Bryant guy, which was an old school move that nobody does anymore. Then he got fired with probation stuff looming and we hired Fran. Then Fran left because of probation and we hired Mike Price, who was as good as we could do at that point. Then Mike Price got fired for diddling a stripper on the University credit card, and we had to hire a coach in May AND with probation issues, and that's where Shula came in. So, like I said with LSU, you have to basically self-destruct yourself to end up where we were in the 2000s and Tennessee is now. And LSU is in a much better place than Tennessee will ever be because of the talent base they have to work with and the connection that talent base has to LSU. And Nebraska isn't even in the same discussion because of recruiting.

Tennessee, Michigan, and Nebraska don't have automatic built-in talent in their state like Texas does. There is no reason for Texas to ever be bad with their recruiting base in their back door, it just comes down to shitty coaching and entitlement.

The REAL question is, will LSU suffer a similar fate as Texas? The recruiting talent is right there at their back door and it shouldn't take much for that program to stumble into good to great seasons, but once again it all comes down to coaching and entitlement

Well said - Texas is the most comparable "worst case scenario" to LSU.

And even those two experienced success. Fran went 10-2 in 2002 and technically finished first in the SEC West. Shula went 10-2 in 2005 (his third year) and finished in the top 10.

The point being that schools with geographic recruiting advantages and an unwavering commitment from donors to maintain top of the line everything should only be able to sink do far. LSU would have to significantly botch two or three hires in a row before they aren't a regular top ten team anymore.

I have no idea how Texas, which is in a hugely populated, Southern, football crazy state and has donors with ridiculous amounts of money has fallen as far as it has, aside from a number of poor hires after Mack Brown.

That's the biggest takeaway here - the fact that Texas is CONSISTENTLY a 7-6/8-5 program over the last decade without probation or any sort of outside issue is insane.

I mean, that shite is embarrassing. A school that rich, with that much history as the flagship of a state with that many great players....again, you almost have to TRY and sabotage things to do that.

One difference is that Texas has to compete with a bunch of Power 5 schools for instate recruits. LSU has the inherent advantage of being the only big-time program in Louisiana.

And you are seeing it the last season plus. However, just having one guy like that does not start to decay a program and make it a place where people don't want to go (like happened to Tennessee and Texas eventually). Now, if you fvck up the next hire, and they suck, then you start getting into a real hole where things start to shift on you.

Hiring a good coach and not having a weird infatuation with dildos.

Something Texas can't seem to do. With the direction to the left LSU is taking y'all might be heading for the same fate unfortunately.

Agreed. In Louisiana, LSU is the only major program. Which is an advantage we have. However, we have a career defensive line coach as head coach who just claps and says 'let's go'

We have to make a solid hire after O is gone.
