What is it with Malzahn and route trees

Not trying to troll my own team. I never played American football growing up so I am genuinely curious why Malzahn doesn’t incorporate more sophisticated route trees into his arsenal - even adding simple routes such as slants down the middle of the field would seem to be a good idea. Malzahn is obviously a smart guy so why do our wide receivers only run routes to sides of the hash marks and deep routes - what am I missing?

His high school offense is simple

Because he runs a scheme he based on the old Wing-T that you only see at the high school levels nowadays.

Saving that for the Georgia game.

There are at most 4 options (and usually only 2) in his t-wing. These options must be very simple. Route trees are for sophisticated offenses like those employed by LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma. Not that your players couldn't ever execute them but because Gus cannot teach them.

His passing plays are based on trickery and the defenders getting lulled to sleep by his running offense.

It’s nothing more than high school level smoke and mirrors

He is a smart coach, but he thinks his offensive philosophy will work no matter what as long as his players execute the script.
When execution breaks down, or the opponent defends his scheme he goes into a shell. Nix became a liability in that UF game but your stubborn old Gus refused to inject some new legs and energy with Gatewood or even put his fastest players (Schwartz/Shivers) on the field to see if they could do better and give Nix time on the sideline to regroup.
You have a weakness at oline, Gus has the knowledge in him to scheme around that deficiency but he won't do it. There's no way he sits back and analyzes film and doesn't see the middle of the field wide arse open for his QB to take advantage.

We had a good week of practice and got our edge back...

quote:And it's been predictable for years. He used to have personnel that could run his scheme and the opponent couldn't stop it even when they knew what was coming. But he no longer has those stout olinemen that could get serious push and open holes for 4-5* RB's to plow through. The oline is lacking and weak and they are Sr's. The RB's he's brought in aren't the SEC caliber he used to have.

Just wait till next year. He needs at least 10 wins this year to buy him time after next years season.
Going to be a bad season next year.

He can still go 9-3 regular season/10-3 with a bowl win this year which would be a huge improvement over last yr and would buy some favor with the fans.

He kind of has to believe that doesn't he? He has only gimmicks and nothing else. So, you live with the h.u. t-wing and you die by the h.u. t-wing

“We are a two back, power running team first. We have to play fast and physical. We use play action to stretch the field. No doubt, we play in the best league in college football. We will get the tight end some touches.”

You forgot to mention that the only time he’s ever won big is with a dynamic runner at QB. Yet he keeps playing Nix when he has that type of QB standing on the sidelines in Gatewood.
