What I don’t understand about coach O...

You go from winning a national title to giving up 600+ passing yards and losing by 10 to State with a brand new head coach and transfer QB. Not to mention LSU is probably top 3-5 in the country in terms of talent.
Even with the opt outs, etc, did Coach O really prepare his team for the air raid? I think he didn’t take us seriously.

This was obvious.

3 returning starters from the national championship team played on Saturday. There may have been that kind of attrition from a team before, but I don’t remember it if so.

I know in 2007 there was a totally different style of football being played but i remember Pelini being a great DC. I could be remembering that incorrectly but you have to be doing something pretty good to get a HC job at Nebraska coming from being a DC. I just couldnt believe they never seemed to make any adjustments. If yall dont have those late turnovers and kind of turn it around that game easily could've been more embarrassing, like a 21+ point loss embarrassing.

Also credit to KJ Costello, he was on the same page as his receivers and was dropping some absolute dimes out there.

I think the coaching staff at LSU took on the mindset of their fanbase.
Our guys are better because they are wearing LSU jerseys. No matter second string, third string, whatever.
Pelini not adjusting out of man coverage when LSU was getting torched - he should have been fired on the spot. That was terrible. And you knew what was coming, you couldn't stop it.
Did Coach O rely on his coordinators so much last year that he couldn't help it? Is Coach O really a good coach? Or was it the coordinators and elite talent? Did LSU give a man an extension that is really a 7-8 win coach?

Coach O didn’t prepare shite. In his mind, he reached the mountain top and is content to never sustain success.
As far as O and the LSU program is concerned, last year was the final year for football to ever be played. They don’t understand how to remain at the top and stay hungry.

Coach O said all offseason that they weren't resting on their laurels and had already forgotten about the championship but I don't believe it. Obviously LSU has more all around talent than MSU, but I think both the players and the coaches overlooked MSU. They thought they would just show up and win with talent alone and that typically doesn't work. Especially going up against an air raid offense.

State will have to get better... 4 turnovers... common man. You tell me State has 4 turnovers and 9 yards net rushing vs LSU... I tell you the final is 59-0 LSU
Everyone in the SEC has been put on notice. You know exactly what State is going to do... 18 years of play calling out there by Leech.. Now stop it.

The played man for four quarters. They obviously either thought they were infinitely more talented and eventually talent would take over or they have no idea how to adjust a game plan when they are getting pounded. Either way not a great look, Grantham isn’t any better though so what do I know.

Are you sleeping with the man? How could you possibly know this? Covid has given literally no access at all. You are just wishing something into existence.

Here’s the issue. Pelini rarely ever makes adjustments. Either the game plan works, or it’s going to be a long night.
Take a look at his first stint at LSU. Several games in there where the opponents came out after halftime and torched the defense.
ETA: Also a lot of games where the defense just suffocated the offense because they were flat out better. That’s no longer the case for many teams. New rules and offenses have seen to that. Pelini actually has to work now, which may be a horrible outcome for LSU’s defense.

Mississippi returned 6 starters from a 6-7 team

You just hit on the definition of Hope. Without it, there would be no State fans.

Regardless, LSU still held a distinct talent advantage.
Also, LSU refused to adjust their defensive strategy. The Air Raid is susceptible to zone defenses, but O refused to adapt.

I don't think we ever practiced the Zone. All off season, Bo continuously said this is the best defense he's ever been around and that he's going to apply lots of pressure on the quarterback. This tells me that he's playing man to man and blitzing the linebackers. So the players probably had no idea how to make the switch.

We lost almost everyone from last year.
We lost our best offensive player and our best defensive lineman 2 weeks ago.
We lost our best defensive player the night before the game.
We still would have lost this game though.
We were woefully unprepared to face an air raid offense. Almost like we didn't expect fricking Mike Leach to pass the ball.
