What does playing a conference only schedule actually do?

Like someone said, what is the difference between Tennessee going to say Norman, OK or Fayetteville, AR? Is this just a liability thing so it stays within the conference? Has to be.

Different Conferences can set different rules for testing/fans/concessions etc

So what's the schedule exactly aside from division opponents and the two cross-division opponents everyone already had?

Is that seriously what we are going for as the reason for conference only schedules? As if there is simply no way that the conference heads agree on protocols for testing and quarantining the teams?

Things like concession availability and attendance are going to be based on political decisions made by state and local leaders, not the schools---which makes the distinction between conference and non-conference opponents even more silly.

If only there was an National Collegiate Athletic Association who would be in charge of facilitating the standards of competition across all of the conferences.

It saves schools money by not paying money to the rent-a-wins because it looks like there won't be many fans in the stands if any at all. Tickets, concessions, parking, etc revenue will be way down.

From what I can tell, it allows them to float scheduling around should the need arise.

If there is an outbreak and they need to delay a game by a week or so, they can control what other teams within the conference are doing at the same time and more easily facilitate that change without disrupting an outside team's schedule.

I guess it allows for a more fluid approach to the season?

Its all about $$$ not safety.

If you don't play the cupcakes you don't have to pay them, without normal capacity schools would lose money playing those games.

It allows Alabama to not play Georgia.

Just watch. They will play Mizzou instead.

- easier to change schedules within conference. If there are cancellations due to isolated quarantines then conferences can move games around to make sure the non quarantined teams can play

- easier to contact trace. super easy to contact trace a team whose schedule is built within a 14 team bubble versus track down the opponent of an opponent of an opponent ......

- ability to space out games and put in additional bye week. see point 1. a conference can dictate scheduling easier when everyone is working together.

It would be great if the P5 schools took this opportunity to completely break away from the G5 and FCS schools and only schedule other P5 schools from now on.

Honestly before this happened everyone discussed this as a positive to get rid of these no name teams littering the schedule. Now because it’s Covid related we’re against it. I love the idea of a 10 game all conference schedule. Better games a more competitive conference for championship and there’s no more speculation about schedule vs schedule at playoff time. Everyone knows that the sec and big ten have much better conferences than the other three.

Unpopular opinion:

If we go 10 game conference schedule, i think LSU, Bama, AU, UGA, UF, and TAMU should all have to play each other.

Flex those SEC muscles.

ETA:
6 Division games + 4 Cross Div games. So UGA and UF's cross div games would be LSU, Bama, AU and TAMU.

The conference schedule has very little to do with any liability around Covid and much more with being able to normalize shcedules.

If you have 3 non-conference opponents on your schedule that do not play this season or postpone their season, and I only have 1, then I have to play 2 more games that you gets bye weeks for.

All teams cannot play each other when there are only 10 games and 14 teams!

right, but you'd play 6 division games and 4 cross.

They could just make it as they want with a top 3 in each div has to play each other.

All I know is if we get some extra cross divisional conference games I won’t be upset. SEC football is the best. I think we can all agree on that. I’d would rather see Georgia play bama auburn LSU and aTm in the same season than play Virginia and a few little sisters of the poor teams. Only thing I’ll hate is not getting to beat the hell out of coach 404 and the jackets this year.
