your point? you're stubborn one aren't you? Maybe show me another SOS computer model ranking instead of ignoring one put in front of you because you don't like what it has to say. For someone so adamant about early season computer models meaning something, one would assume you'd take into account all the data points available to you.

I’m not sure how ELO works. Is UCF higher because they beat Ole Miss 2/3?

to you.
It’s like you never even read my posts
My entire point is that ELO is far better than other computer models, especially RPI.

Except I wasn’t. 90% of computer models suck at this point of the season.

Is it possible for a team to increase their ELO SOS by losing?
I.e. Ole Miss loses, bumps UCF ELO up, which causes Ole Miss SOS to increase as well?

Absolutely. I also wonder why he chooses ELO for baseball when they still use RPI on the committee. BoydsWorld is actually a better site for following throughout the year and looking at their ISR and Needs Report

ELO isn't a computer model, really. It's basically a system where you beat a team and take their pts and you lose and they take yours. It's made for sports with tons of players/teams and lots of games where all the teams/players play eachother in some capacity.
It originally was created for Chess rankings.

Why? It is the most simplistic calculation of all the computer models and isn't used by the selection committee.
Are you aware of how ELO is calculated?

The performance in the ELO system, as with the Harkness system, is not measured in absolute terms. It is inferred from wins, losses, and draws against other players. Players’ ratings depend on the ratings of their opponents and the results scored against them.
• After every game, the winning player takes points from the losing one, and the number of points is determined by the difference in the 2 player’s rating.
If the higher-rated player wins, a few points are taken from the lower-rated player.
• If the lower-rated player wins, a lot of points are taken from the higher-rated player.
• If it’s a draw, the lower-rated player gains a few points from the higher rated player.
This is what separates it from other computer models.
Specifically for baseball, there is obviously some sort of pre-season basis ranking for the teams that is built upon as the season goes on.
UCF started the year as the #25 team in ELO and is now #31

Does everyone start with the same ELO? Are the jumps and falls bigger at the beginning and decrease the more data points available? I play a lot of chess, and that’s how it works on chess.com

Dude you are super thick. RPI is trash right now. I specifically said ELO is only better before we get a couple weeks into conference play. I’ll use RPI once it gets settled.

Yes, at least from what I know about the way they do it for college basketball/baseball.

Then it seems likely to me that Ole Miss boosted their own SOS by losing. And vice-versa for teams who won. Unless I’m missing something

No. Which is why it’s better than RPI at this point.

I do not know.

you may want to tell that to the selection committee then, bud. Because RPI is the computer model they still use in baseball. And is it "trash" because you read that somewhere or can you explain why, in your own words, why their model is trash? I mean, at the end of the day, ALL computer models have serious and glaring flaws, which is why I barely pay attention to them. They're even more worthless 2 weeks into the season because the number of data points is so small. The only time they matter is following what your team needs are based on your remaining schedule when you're trying to predict what you need to to to earn a top 8, a top 16, get a bid, etc. Even then, you have to look more into past history and number of bids each conference it likely going to get, money one site would generate to host, etc. Outside that, they're pointless in this sport with so many teams and such a lack of common opponents. The actual polls are even more worthless, which is painfully evident by the wide disparity in the ranking each week pool to poll. You seem very adamant that they do mean something, and that's fine for you to think that way, but I just believe that is a very ignorant take, especially this early in the season. And to sit here and argue with me about SOS with an actual model in your face, JFC dude

Alabama 88
Tennessee 119
Vanderbilt 122

Texas A&M 136
Kentucky 150

Nothing against Warren Nolan but Florida has not played a tougher schedule than either Ole Miss or MSU. Not even close. Miami is not that good.
