I'm really astonished at how badly Bama mauled UGA at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. It's like they were playing Tennessee or something. Lacey and Yeldon had over 300 yards rushing! UGA finally started to run Gurley with some success once Jesse Williams for Bama (what happened to him?) went out. Say what you will about Kirby, but he has put together much better lines and they didn't look overmatched there in any of their losses, so I don't think he's comparable to Richt even if their records are similar.

One of the reasons I'm not a fan of Grantham as a DC. Seven guys were drafted
off that defense including two 1st rounders. It was horrible all year vs the
run.

Grantham plays the numbers.
He dominates the line of scrimmage with extra bodies.
That makes teams one dimensional and that is where his pass rush makes hay.
When an opponent can throw deep downfield, it fricks with granthams numbers in the box and the entire house of cards falls apart. The run defense is insufferable and the pass rush is nonexistent.

Uh. They didn't look that great against us.

It was insufferable the entire year.
I can show the numbers again but we've this discussion before.

Another thing about that was that Richt mismanaged the roster to such an extent that UGA had less than 70 scholarship players that season. Defensive depth was horrible, especially in the front 7.

He had great success against spread offenses without the vertical threat downfield. But a competent QB with NFL talent at WR (tennessee) could throw and run at will.
His defenses are an illusion. Like a Nascar driver who is in the lead during the last 5-10 laps but knows he cant win because he skipped the pits and is running out of gas and on bad tires. It looks great against inferior opponents, but will always fall apart against a downfield team.

I believe the count was 67 vs Bama's 85.
Our guys were gassed in the 4 gtr

Eh. Abry Jones being out really hampered the DL in that game. But all the other stuff people have said be true too. Credit where it's due though, that Alabama OL was simply magnificent.
That game was closer, probably, than it should have been because of the blocked FG returned for a TD.

We had more than 67 on scholarship. But with season ending injuries, that is all we had left on the roster to finish out post season play.
The roster management was awful, though. Richt was so afraid of being accused of over signing that he would limit his scholarships to 85 on national signing day. Meaning that every injury, every academically ineligible, every transfer, and every kid kicked out of school from Februray on put us lower and lower under the limit.

That hurt us on 2 different spots on the line. First, Abry had a good career in the NFL. He was a great unknown college player. Second, we moved our best, biggest nose tackle out on end (another NFLer). We suffered at 2 positions because of the loss of Abry and were significantly worse because of it.

Because friggin Garner refused to sub much if at all on the DL. You can watch our DL barely put their hands down starting in the middle of the 3rd.

I thought we had 69 by the end of that season.

LSU didn't get much pressure except when bringing numbers, like Delpit's huge hit. On defense, they did as good against CEH as anyone.
I thought he was referring to the 2012 Alabama team's offensive line vs the LSU DL (and comparing it to Georgia's DL)?

Oh the irony of posting that in a thread about Alabama vs Georgia

they hijack any thread that brings attention to the accomplishments of another school. It's really kind of sad. Look at us, we're Alabama.

Way too advanced a concept for the majority of their fanbase to understand.

Williams had to take a leave of absence for cancer treatments. I believe he's doing okay but I don't think his NFL career ever took off. And yeah, when we lost Williams up the middle it kinda hurt us. But then he came back into the game for a crucial 3rd & 1 play where he stopped Gurley right in his tracks at the line of scrimmage. That might have been the play of the game because we scored on the very next drive to take the lead for good.
If Gurley makes that first down, Georgia bleeds more clock and who knows what happens next?
